The first Red Fang video is also can't-miss. Same director.
Red Fang - Prehistoric Dog
These guys are Portland locals, bumped into them a few times. Great dudes.

1) Clearly Posehn cost a hella lot more than $0.00

2) I swear I had that flag helmet as a young'n.

3) I swear that guitarist (especially when wearing that hat) is a much younger version of my old mechanic. Seriously, it's uncanny.

4) They should've used a Pinto.

I don't even like Red Fang, but their videos are really entertaining. Like OK GO in that regard.

Not to be pedantic, but aren't these guys more 'stoner rock' (a la Queens of the Stone Age) than metal? Anyway, fun video. :)

Upholding metallic ideals is an increasingly lost cause.

With absolutely no sarcasm intended I say that misguided attempts at using chords and vocal hooks combined with a pretty shocking and unconscionable kicking-to-the-curb of The Riff have created a whole bunch of bands who call themselves metal but don't understand that metal IS the rhythm guitar riff. Everything else is gravy.

Even some who used to approach metal in the proper riff-based way are shitting the bed as if they looked around and said "Hey, if all these new bands are getting away with not writing any good riffs what the fuck are we bothering for?" Lamb of God I'm looking at you.

And I'm not really referring to the band this post is about, I'm just taking up your space and time to talk about my own fragile feelings about bloody, brutal metal.

Brian Posehn

I lived next door to Dave Sullivan (their guitarist, the guy getting the mail in the beginning of the video) in pdx and have been in that house many times. Dave is, in addition to being a shredding guitarist, a really sharp coder and once of the nicest guys in the world. I was stoked when I lost contact with him and then found out he was in a rock band touring all over the place.

I saw the check cashing and the gas station food and was like "Noooo! You're on a budget! Both of those things could have been a lot cheaper with a little bit of planning!". Because I'm a dork like that.

Eh I don't know that this is clear. He's been a friend and outspoken fan of the band since before this album dropped – they may have paid him, or it's just as likely he did it for fun.

On the other hand, I am pretty sure they don't give a rip whether they're categorized as "metal" or not. "The one great thing about rock and roll," as pyramid termite once said, "is that if you turn it up to 11, you can't hear what they're saying about it"

Now I am going to watch it a fifth time and see what happens.

posted by Brocktoon at 1:11 PM on October 23, 2012

Well, no. And if you really want to go down the pedant's guide to genre dickery, I'm happy to do that with you, but in order to make a claim that this isn't metal, you're going to need a definition that cuts out bands like Mastadon and Venom.

(And "New Wave" is a bad counter-example because it's tied to a time period much more than a sound.)

While all the subgenres and definitions could be argued endlessly, I quite enjoy this site for a taste of different bands and eras of metal http://mapofmetal.com
