I'm ... struggling a bit now with the Gangnam Style parodies. It's good but ... too many ...

Was there an intentional Last Year at Marienbad reference in there?

THAT WAS TOTALLY WORTH THE WAIT FOR CHOMSKYYYYYYYYY *dead*

This delights me as much as the [previously posted] Ai Weiwei Gangnam video did! I have not yet tired of watching dissident artists and distinguished academics cavorting to insanely catchy music. Bring it on, I say.

A+ for effort (and Noam Chomsky).

Which guy in the horsehead mask was Chomsky?

This one with the Mythbusters' Grant Imahara is one of my favorites.

Could someone please provide the timestamp for Chomsky on this Gangnam Style parody?

(I believe I have now produced the 21st century version of "Colorless green ideas sleep furiously.")

None of these are really parodies, are they?
posted by Wolfdog at 3:45 PM on October 27, 2012 [2 favorites]

Wolfdog – no, they're really hommages.

I was trying to maximize the semantic nonsense. Anyway, I didn't see lobsters anywhere in it.

This is clearly a throwdown for Caltech to do something with actual rewritten lyrics, not just a lipdub. Come on!

Someone who was truly Gangnam Style would not have a stainless steel rat.

Sadly that West Point one is a lot better than the USNA one.

Korea is quickly becoming the new Japan in the American consciousness. The Far Eastern country its okay to like. I approve of this.

This delights me as much as the [previously posted] Ai Weiwei Gangnam video yt did!

Which, like the NY Times, is currently banned in China.

The USNA has been holding back ever since someone explained the Village People song to them.

Maybe the best MIT performance of a novelty song since Richard Stallman did "Crank Dat Superman."

I was trying to figure out what was different about the West Point one, and then I realized it was that all the women in that one look like they could break my arm.

I like it! Good on those MIT guys (and girls). And Psy, and Chomsky et al.

This is amazing. I'd love to see one from my alma mater... but it probably wouldn't get out of committee because someone would inevitably be oppressed.

Sorry, I don't get the parody.
posted by sutt at 6:24 PM on October 27, 2012 [1 favorite]

a bunch of my former students are involved with / in this.

I'm pretty over Psy, though. Oof. Hope he cashed in--pretty sure he knows this is a one-shot deal.

I have to say, I really love the song. It's a wonderful earworm for me and man the video is just so fun.
posted by Carillon at 8:26 PM on October 27, 2012

That was really good. They also did more of the dance than most of the parodies have done, which i appreciate because it's kind of a fun dance. Also, whoot Indian kids with lummi sticks (and Chomsky, goes without saying).

I watched them film this on campus over the course of a week, about a month ago. My favorite to see live was the part where he's walking down the infinite corridor arm in arm with students (about 0:30-0:40) -- they lay in wait about 30 feet from the corridor end, at the busiest part of the day, and just pounced on unsuspecting undergrads on their way to class (male and female, by the way, though it looks like only one shot made it into the video), went arm in arm, yelled "don't think! just come with me!" and danced them to the end of the hallway. Totally joyful and fun for a bunch of students otherwise trudging to and from class. They did that all over campus, just recruited people hanging around in groups (or hunted them down, eg soccer and pole vault teams) and got them to be goofy for 5 minutes.

Probably more fun to film than to watch, but I'm glad it happened, it made a lot of people's day a little more random and a little more fun.

(I had no part in making the video, I'm just on campus every day and ran into the film crew a bunch.)

Rather than make yet another gangnam post: infinite gangnam style.

I hate to admit how much I like this song. I've lost all respect for myself musically.
