One critic found it "an abominable, abdominal comedy." Others see it as one of the best comedy films ever made. But clearly, these two fans successfully channeled the spirit of the original scene when they made this 50 second homage to one of the film's slapstick sequences .
I dunno. The Farrelley Brothers have inflicted grievous, grievous harm on the art of film making, true. Yet... the Three Brothers from "Me Myself and Irene" who deserved their own movie (where they adopted Whitey as one of their own), the table full of crusty, rowdy, blue-collar guys at the diner who stood as a man to defend Rocket in "Stuck on You", Bill Murray triumphant as his comb-over goes askew...

OK. Here's the deal. Just give me one more movie with the equivalent of where Keith David, the the dad of a beautiful blonde, who demands of her prom date: "How'd you get the beans above the frank?" and I will love you forever.

I remember seeing D&D in the theater. The "turbo lax" scene had me laughing out loud at the sheer balls of such literal toilet humor. For some reason I glanced down the aisle and in the dark I could see a little boy, maybe 7 or 8. He was on his feet in the aisle and doubled over, convulsing in laughter. I felt something of a kindred spirit with him and not ashamed. Because really, it was pretty damn funny.

I, too, saw D&D in the theater, at the age of like 13 or 14, and remember the laughter becoming physically painful.

The moment with the most, um, resonance in my own life: that John Denver's full of shit, man.

I was probably 14 or 15 when I saw this film, and thought for a while that it was pretty silly. But my brother and his best friend were 10, and loved it beyond words, and quoted it for years afterwards. I can't help but love it now; my love is refracted through their enthusiasm. I see the film now and laugh because they laughed.

Recently I learned that the Big Gulps scene was ad-libbed, as Carrey knew the actors were hired for non-speaking extra parts and wanted to see if he could goad them into saying something.

"What's the soup du jour?"
"It's the soup of the day."
"Mmm. That sounds good. I'll have that."

I always ask that if some place bills their soup as the soup du jour even though I don't want soup. Nobody's bit yet, but if they ever do I'll just eat whatever they give me for the sake of comedy.

I also have to overcome the incredible temptation to order "cream of sum yung gai" at Thai restaurants.

Ha!

Yeah, I saw it in the theater, too, and there was an old man five or six seats away from me laughing, chuckling, and gasping so hard I honestly thought he might have a heart attack and die. Quite infectious; the rest of the audience enjoyed the movie even more after his nearly apoplectic fit.

I can't stand to watch about 3/4 of any given Farelly flick, but I will say that it all looks pretty intentional to me. They mean to do exactly what they're doing, and while I'm not sure I'm a fair judge, it seems to me they are probably doing whatever that is pretty well.
