these are flat out awesome.

As long as we're talking aircraft paintjobs, though, have you ever seen my Bristol F2B? (action shot) (you get ten bonus points if you recognize the picture)

Wow, that's truly a labor of love. I know I'm not supposed to enjoy war toys but those would be a treat to own. I'm not sure my partner or my workmates would be able to put up with me running around making machine gun noises during highly contested dogfights though. I also learned three valuable things from this post:

1. The Germans of WWI had the BEST palette and design schemes ever. I'm particularly fond of those hexagon patterns.

2. We need to cease all F-16 sales to the Vatican City posthaste.

3. I need to enlist in the Turkish Air Force immediately, just to qualify for this paint scheme.

But the Russians shit on you in jet fighter aesthetics.

No, the US did when they started painting thunderbolts and mustangs silver and not giving a shit about camouflage

No, the US did when they started painting thunderbolts and mustangs silver and not giving a shit about camouflage

That wasn't paint. It was the bare aluminum metal. Especially as the allies gained air superiority, it was determined that camouflaging aircraft didn't really help anything, especially with bombers. When flying, the contrails would point straight to the planes anyway. And, the weight savings by leaving the planes unpainted meant they flew just a bit faster.

As for these illustrations...Fantastic stuff. Great bit of whimsy.

My uncle's dad lived in Pensacola where the Blue Angels home NAS is. He had commanded a B-52, an airbase and retired a full-bird Air Force Colonel. Somehow the Blue Angels found out he lived there and found out where his house was. Every morning training run then began with a low run over his house. That's interservice rivalry for you.
