A Penguin a Week
October 30, 2012 9:10 AM   Subscribe

Karyn Reeves collects Penguin paperbacks. She reads and reviews a Penguin a week. She also blogs about Penguins (such as the elusive green Penguins) and showcases classic Penguin book covers. Nonfiction fans may want to check out her list of Pelicans - or visit the Pelican Project at Things Magazine (previously).

I hope Penguin's distinctiveness doesn't get lost now that they've been bought.

In another example of my fine ability to misread things, I saw "Keanu Reeves" and thought, Boy, this actually does boost my interest level in whatever scholocky film he'll be in next.

Karyn Reeves.

KARYN.

Sorry Karyn.

Keanu Reeves reviewing different species of Antarctic penguins would be the most precious thing.

She reads and reviews a Penguin a week.

Rather than making us wade through them in reverse chronological order, she should offer a link that takes us to a random Penguin.

She ... reviews a Penguin a week.

1st October
Emperor Penguin
Classic penguin shape and colouring, but a bit large for my tastes. Babies very cute though. 4/5

7th October
Little Penguin
No marks for original name, that's for sure. Lives in burrows, which is cool, but overall looks a bit unfinished. 2/5

14th October
King Penguin
Soft of a smaller, cooler Emperor Penguin (as you might expect from the name). Great colouring and babies look like Chewbacca. 5/5

I had such high hopes for her blog about the elusive Green Penguin. 'Cuz it would be really cool to see a penguin that wasn't mostly black and white. But alas, it turns out to be about more books.

The Green Penguin would also make a good name for a superhero.

I don't see a random link, but if you scroll down halfway, there's a sidebar listing "Penguins read and discussed," so you can jump to any that look interesting.

My friends find my fear and worry of penguins amusing. I do not. I find their lack of fear troubling. Penguins should be feared, they should be observed, and all of us should be prepared.

- They're always well dressed.
- Those 'tuxedos'. It's as if they know something we do not.
- And while I applaud the male Emperor penguin for upending gender norms, there's still something very asshole-like about a mother who just says: "Fuck off, I'm on vacation, here's the kid—you deal with it."
- The way they walk. Fuck that. Fuck them.
- They smell bad.
- They have been known to rise up against people and attempt to steal their babies.

So no to this. No to penguins. NO TO PENGUINS!!!

Fizz: "So no to this. No to penguins. NO TO PENGUINS!!!"

Some people have told me they don't think a fat penguin really embodies the grace of Linux, which just tells me they have never seen an angry penguin charging at them in excess of 100 mph. They'd be a lot more careful about what they say if they had. -- Linus Torvalds

Is it just me, or don't you wish that the newly formed company would've been called Random Penguin or Random Penguin House instead of Penguin-Random House?

Suit yourself, I would have called it House of the Random Penguin and warned young people to stay away, knowing that now that it was forbidden they would take up reading in droves..
