I don't usually like large-scale Minecraft projects because they're usually just pixel-art recreations of other spaces (typically nerd fetish stuff), which isn't an aesthetic I find appealing, or an idea that I find novel. This, however, is amazing. Here's a download link for the world file if you care to explore it on your own.

Seriously... that is amazing work. I was hanging out with my sister a few weeks ago and we were watching some fanstuffs of various sorts (probably Pony Gangnam Style) and she brought out good old "Some people have too much time on their hands!" thing - good-naturedly, but still... No! So wrong! We live in an amazing time for art and creation of all kinds and it's awesome that brilliant creative people have the time - not to mention the tools - to make things like this, and we can find them, enjoy them, and share them like no time ever before. There's a lot of stuff that sucks right now and doesn't look to be getting better, but people having time and using it to make things that can't come from an assembly line is the good part.

I spent hours upon hours on the mefightclub server, which was full of astounding things. This would have fit right in, and is definitely a work of art. I am curious whether this was built with an editor or by direct player action under otherwise normal world rules. It's quite challenging to design some larger architectures block-by-block.

MCEdit is one of the ones commonly used for map-making, but I wouldn't put it past someone to do this in creative mode. It would be possible even in (peaceful) survival, however.

I don't play games, like, at all, and so as with a lot of what is happening in our culture, the whole Minecraft thing has basically flown right over my head. I mean, I know it's a thing, and I know roughly what sort of thing it is, and I've watched a couple of amusing YouTube videos, but at this point I seem to be basically incapable of developing a real interesting in playing anything. Anyway, this is a really beautiful piece of work, and I'm super impressed.

I didn't notice it until now, but what mod is being used to fix the lighting engine? God rays, soft shadow blending, and a few other details don't seem to be possible in the vanilla install.

I didn't notice it until now, but what mod is being used to fix the lighting engine? God rays, soft shadow blending, and a few other details don't seem to be possible in the vanilla install. People have come up with Shader Mods for Minecraft that can do some pretty amazing things. Never been able to get one working, personally. I assume you need a video card that cost more than $30.
