Oh my goodness, I didn't even remember that I'd forgotten about this until I read the login text. Man oh man.

except maybe this is a parody, because when I actually clicked the link, I don't remember it looking anything like that

okay once I started playing around this became much more awesome and is definitely not something that existed in my youth

Highly unrealistic. The text echoes much too quickly.

This is great.

Heh, this is fun and meta. Thanks for the link!

NOW TO DERAIL BECAUSE TEXT ADVENTURE/BBS THREADS ON MEFI ARE SCARCE

Did you ever fight a "Strange Lamia" on a MUD? Could you be a ninja and headkick people? What about the chameleon king and queen? Do these ring a bell? For god's sake message me, I have been trying to locate the MUD I was on in the late 90s via the usual channels for years!

Yeah, I'm having a hard time doing anything. I forgot how to think like this.

I am so glad this was one of the games I managed to finish before Comp voting was done this year...and sad it didn't place as highly as I thought it should. Maybe it's nostalgia doing some of the voting, but I loved the immersion.

Kaseijin: The game is pretty linear except for a few moments...keep doing things and eventually you'll get bounced to a new character.
posted by cobaltnine at 1:08 PM on December 14, 2012

A satisfying ending indeed.

This was my favorite comp game this year! Tip: if you want to see the different endings but don't want to replay the entire thing to see them, use the 'skipthru' command to skip to the last act. (But finish the game at least once before you do that!)

Also, turn your speakers on! I didn't realize there was sound until I got to the end and saw the audio credits.

There are modem noises!

Is the point of the game to completely reset my keyboard mappings and require a reboot of my computer? Because I think I won.
posted by urbanwhaleshark at 1:19 PM on December 14, 2012

That was really sweet.

I loved this. More nostalgia than I can typically manage.
posted by soma lkzx at 1:42 PM on December 14, 2012

That was great! Worth checking out the different endings too.

It seems like the sound doesn't work in Firefox. I've tried it on two different computers. It seems to work in Chrome, though.

I didn't even notice there was sound.

Hit up fellow MeFite Jason Scott. In addition to being the world's leading Internet historian, he used to be quite the mudder; even ran one for several years. If he doesn't know the answer I'm sure he can point you to whoever does.

What? A BBS that -requires- javascript?? Will all these improvements never end?

The javascript Guild must be a co-sponsor. Those people will soon have signs welcoming you to every town.

This is pretty fun -- thanks! All porn shall now be referred to as "the forbidden tome"!

You were playing a MUD running CircleMUD software. And yeah, you've been looking a while.

No support for ZMODEM, though.

Any fellow Tele-Arena (via MajorBBS) fans out there? Ah, what I wouldn't give to suit up in dragonscale armor one more time, take up a levinblade, and attack an Apollyon dragon just to see it satisfyingly "fall to the ground, lifeless!"

Ah, that was absolutely great! Thanks!

(Works fine in IE10 for me)

So is it pretty linear, except for your choice at the end?
posted by wheloc at 3:12 AM on December 15, 2012

Well, this is fantastic so far. Although these hi-res graphics are a scam so the game company could put another 64k floppy in the box and charge us double.

Oh man this just makes me wanna fire up zMUD and head over to Xyllomer. Really good though I definitely enjoyed it.
posted by lizarrd at 1:29 PM on December 15, 2012

Tele-Arena! I was kind of good at that!
posted by halonine at 1:59 PM on December 15, 2012

So - did anyone choose someone else than Chris at the end?
posted by Riton at 5:52 PM on December 15, 2012
