This post was deleted for the following reason: On reflection, the two threads are awfully similar and I think moving everything to one will work better for everyone. Please feel free to post this in the below thread though. -- restless_nomad

A Word from LeVar: Talking with our children about the elementary school shootings.

"Our children rely on us to help them define the world they live in, and at the same time they have razor sharp radar for when the truth is being hidden from them. Being honest with them, respecting when they want to talk and when they don’t, accepting their reactions as “appropriate” no matter what they are, and then returning to your family’s routine is the best we can do during these media fueled, tragedies."

I came home from work tonight and simply couldn't stop hugging my kids. It got to the point where my autistic daughter finally bit me so I'd release her.

I can't even imagine.

I'm so sorry.

Mister Rogers was a good man and it's important to remember that the world is full of people with that same love and decency.

The very fact that there are so many readily available, thoroughly researched resources to address this is evidence, to me at least, that we are too far gone to ever get this right.

My wife dropped my daughter off at school this morning, as I'm sure millions of other parents did. I can't possibly imagine what it must be like to hear news that something this horrific happened at your child's school.

I can't wait to pick up my daughter today as early as I can.

One more thing that should be required watching on days like today: Charlie Brooker on the tragic ironies of reporting mass shootings.

I would like to apologize to all the people commuting home with me today -- I was having trouble seeing because I was crying and listening to the news.

My friends were among those pictured in the pet adoption place in the Oregon mall shooting & we've been trying to process that for the last two days. And now this horrific act.... I don't even know what to say.

My kindergartner gets off the bus in an hour, and I'm trying to develop a plan. right now, I have no idea what she will know; the teacher emailed me to let me know that all the kids in the class are currently blissfully ignorant, but the bus ride could change everything. My plan right now is to just respond to emotion with emotion and questions with answers; if she picks up that I'm sad, I will tell her "Very far away from here, a bad person hurt a lot of people, and I'm sad about it" and only fill in details if she asks. If she knows, I'll answer questions minimally.

fuuuuuuuck me.
