The Secret History of Guns. The Ku Klux Klan, Ronald Reagan, and, for most of its history, the NRA all worked to control guns. The Founding Fathers? They required gun ownership—and regulated it. Wow, this issue has really been cluttering up my Facebook feed - just when the election was over.
I have to remember to be tactful and show restraint when interacting with gunowners or others who advocate a liberal interpretation of the Second Amendment.
They're feeling so defenseless, vulnerable and assaulted in the wake of Newtown, poor things.

The Reagan quotations in the article are priceless.
Republicans in California eagerly supported increased gun control. Governor Reagan told reporters that afternoon that he saw “no reason why on the street today a citizen should be carrying loaded weapons.” He called guns a “ridiculous way to solve problems that have to be solved among people of good will.” In a later press conference, Reagan said he didn’t “know of any sportsman who leaves his home with a gun to go out into the field to hunt or for target shooting who carries that gun loaded.” The Mulford Act, he said, “would work no hardship on the honest citizen.”
I have duly filed this for future deployment against pontificating open carry blowhards.
Something that struck me yesterday: a short news article, either on WashPo or the WSJ, on the President's call for renewed consideration of an assault weapons ban garnered over 4,000 comments in about two hours. Two hours. One one story, one one site. Distortion would seem inevitable.

I hate to do this, since I think this is a great article that people would probably love to discuss right now, but once I started reading I just knew it was a double.

This is one of those things that has gotten me angrier and angrier over the past week - especially as details of the attack started coming out. I've gone from "mostly libertarian with grave reservations" to a much harder line, particularly with regard to non-sporting weapons and ammo stockpiling.
Arguing on the internet with gun pedants (they're the ones huffing and puffing below about my "non-sporting weapons" remark) and hand-wringing cynics is doing my blood pressure no favors, so instead, I've decided to use my energy to get my local, state and national reps involved. So far, Im only letter writing, but I'm looking into organizing as well as I can locally. It will at least feel as if I'm getting something accomplished.
