Not as whimsical, this cat elevator is also pretty cool. The elevator is fully operated by the cat, the cabin is fitted with an infrared catflap, only the domestic cat has access.

I would build this (or probably more accurately pay for the supplies for my partner to do this) and our cats wouldn't use it just to spite me. If I spent the same time/money on new bookshelves, however, they'd be all up in them. This is their way.

Goddamn cats. Don't get me wrong, I love the little bastard we have. He slapped around a field mouse in our woodpile a bit back and he loves the hell out of me for some reason. I spent two weeks building something like this between the house and the garage so he could hunt (for those of you that have carpentry skills, figure about 2 hours) plus a cat tree out of concrete tube forms. Quick, easy to use, and I still almost sawed my thumb off. I'll probably spend 6 months on this and blind myself in one eye with spray paint. I have two dogs. Say what you will about about the love of dogs, they never drove me to carpentry.

Your wording implies that a cat with a vest and monocle would somehow not be awesome. While cats will occasionally wear vests (and rock them, as my profile picture will attest), they do not use monocles. When they are surprised, the monocle invariably drops free from the face (lacing developed brows as they do) and falls comically to the floor. Being comical enrages the cat, which is not awesome, especially since it means damage to my shoes.

Unless you've bought a really expensive suitcase or leave your coat where the cat can reach it. Dogs are accommodating and glad to add mudprints on your coat free of charge by jumping at you.
