Mike Auldridge, the influential dobro player has died. While he played with many people over the years (Emmylou Harris, Vince Gill, etc.), he was a long standing member of bluegrass band The Seldom Scene (caution, autoplay music). Here is The Seldom Scene playing 'Rider,' Mike takes a solo at about 6:40.

Here he is playing and being interviewed as part of Mel Bay's Artist Interview series. Here is a short series of videos of Mike playing at Beard Guitars (with whom he had a sponsorship deal) in 2011.

Man, oh, man. The Seldom Scene was essentially the house band at The Birchmere for many years. I used to work with John Duffey's daughter, and have seen The Seldom Scene hundreds of times. Giant talent. Great loss. .

The music, history, and stories in these links are great. I wish I'd known Auldridge's work and influence before this... the energy of bluegrass so much captures the vividness of being alive, and the dobro adds a layer of mood that deepens that for me. Thank you, Mike. .

. I've only recently been introduced to the Seldom Scene's work. They played at RockyGrass this year and it just killed. Bunch of old dudes up there sitting on chairs playing this sort of understated stuff and it was one of the most dance-able sets of the day (on a bill with Trampled by Turtles and the Stringdusters, no less). I've been listening to albums ever since, especially Live at the Cellar Door. Really excellent music.
