The American Gut Project is a open source science experiment where for $99 dollars you can send in a sample from your skin, mouth or colon and have it genetically analyzed and added to a database of the flora found on and in other people from all over the country. Larger donations get you the option of sending additional samples and getting more detailed genetic analysis. For a whopping $25,000.00 you can "Be among the first in the world to get the most detailed map of your gut microbiome and help us push the state-of-the-art in high-throughput sequence technology of microbial communities." The project has been written about in Prevention and Scientific American magazines, among other places.
