Barbie's Hot! Though they claim they have no interest in mass production, I can say right now that I'd buy this Barbie. Woo!

barbie ran into some trouble with this in 1999. the butterfly art barbie was pulled from production at some point. i think it has re-emerged but now the tattoos are temporary and can be placed by the owner.

-- Dateline: California -- El Segundo-based Mattel Toys, the world's largest toymaker, has bowed to complaints over their recent "Butterfly Art Barbie." Although the doll -- which features a small butterfly tattoo on her stomach -- will not be pulled from store shelves, the company has abandoned plans to include tattoos and piercings on the upcoming "Generation Girl" line of teen-targeted Barbie dolls. The "Butterfly Art Barbie" is a bestseller, but Mattel has logged "about a dozen" complaints regarding the tattooed toy.

you can still buy the temporary tat version today. and i'm sure you could find the original on one of them there auction sites too.

In a recent experiment by Mattel to test local creativity, 20 design students in Hong Kong were given two days to dress up the venerable doll and the results certainly have turned heads

I believe this is a typo. What they meant to say was "In a recent experiment to see if we can drum up some free marketing and get consumers to send links to a 'whacky' Barbie article with a picture of our product . . ."

OR perhaps "In an experiment to test the local creativity of our Asian marketing department . . ."

Jeez, arco, that's even more twisted that the dragon lady Barbie!

Red's arm articulation allows her two poses: (1) the horrified "oh my! a wolf!" pose, and (2) the non-horrified "oh my! it's cold in the forest!" pose.

She was certainly cold when the artist drew her.

reminds me of fury dolls, who makes custom barbies. she-devils, anatomically correct, vampire, mardi gras party girls, playboy bunnies...a weird combo of barbie worship and taking a jab at womens' stereotypes.

Then of course there were Trailer Trash Barbie and Drag Queen Barbie (Ken in a wig) that got busted by Mattel. I would've loved a Trailer Trash Barbie of my very own.

I like this line from the Yahoo! story:

Parents, however, need not worry their children may be tainted by the less-than-wholesome Barbie as toy giant Mattel Inc has no plans to mass produce her.

I wonder what qualified her for "less-than-wholesome" status: (a) having a tattoo, (b) being asian or (c) wearing black.

Didn't Mattel use to regularly sue people for doing this kinda stuff to their Barbie? Personally I think they're a bit too anal about protecting their trademark.

This must be more of an international past time than I thought. Even altculture has a piece about it. (i'm being sarcastic in case you couldn't tell)
