They made it from beer cans, razors, safety pins, and did I do this part already? Whatever. They loaded it with the most precious artifacts of human culture they could find in Mexican Johnny D-bag's van. "You gotta make it faster than regular Voyager," said Red. "So our culture gets to the aliens before the CIA's fascist pseudo-culture."

As I've heard it, Frank Drake's shower and Carl Sagan's a grower. You really think anyone was going to argue with Carl Fucking Sagan?

Oh and this was pretty great.

Best argument AGAINST private space programs I've seen.

Written by the wildly imaginative webcomicker responsible for the Mad Scientist Epic "Narbonic", 51% of the Insane Black Ops comedy "Skin Horse", the X-Files Recap that's better than cortex's and "The Trouble with Tribbles, A Television Adaptation by Edward Gorey". So it had me at "Where'd they get plutonium? F*** you."

The only way this would've been more fun is if it were Steampunk Voyager...

*waves*

So I'm the Assistant Editor over at Escape Pod. And also the reader for this episode. Because I read this story in the slush and couldn't stop laughing, then read it to my wife, who also laughed out loud (which never happens), at which point I forwarded it to Mur with a "fuck yes" and a note insisting I get to read it.

Mur tells me she'll let me know when I have to get the reading done. Then she ends up resigning from EP and Al and Norm take over. All's fine, as far as I know. I've acquired a shiny new microphone in preparation and am waiting for word.

Then last weekend, we moved into our new house. (A big enough hassle, but we also have an 11-month-old.) On Monday, I e-mail Mat (EP's sound guy who stitches the intro and outro and story and whatnot all together and makes them purty) from work to tell him that my weekly feedback segment is going to be a little late due to not being unpacked or having internet access at home. And he goes, "Oh, and you know you're supposed to do the reading for the episode this week, right?"

So this, my first-ever narration gig, involved me squatting at midnight in a room filled with boxes and empty bookshelves, going "And where did they get the blue... puh buh buh buh fuuuuuuuuck *click click click*" for several hours and getting it in for processing early Thursday morning.

If I'd known it would get posted on Metafilter, I'd have rerecorded that whole section where I stumbled over "viscera" and had to kind of spackle it awkwardly back in. Now I'm all embarrassed. :-/

Still, it's a fucking awesome story, in my opinion. Y'all should come hang out on the EA forums and set people straight.

I really don't understand American punk.

I assume this is some sort of American version of Dogs In Space?
That's the filter I am understanding it through.

Which you should watch if you haven't. True facts.

I watched about half of it on New Years Eve. It wasn't bad. The names sound more like UK punk names.

Then the punks built Punk Voyager. They made it from beer cans, razors, safety pins, and did I do this part already? Whatever. They loaded it with the most precious artifacts of human culture they could find in Mexican Johnny D-bag's van. Johnny Razor found some surf magazines. Johnny Bonesaw found a guitar pick and a book about prison tattoos. Mexican Johnny D-bag got upright long enough to find his second-best roach clip and third-best weed. Red found a Clash eight-track. And Lacuna, with great ceremony, placed within Punk Voyager the first and only LP by Bad Feet, the band they were in sometimes.

This justifies the story. Such a perfect image. Raise a toast to St Joe Strummer!

What I particularly like about this is that the lead-in posted here sounds like an Achewood storyline featuring Lyle and Todd (and funded by Ray).
