Holy. Shit. That is a lot of effort. And a really good job at getting the exact right level of detail while keeping the image clean. My particular favourite detail is the crotch bulge in the elevator, which appears and disappears with every thrust.

So I suppose the logical next step will be for someone with way too much time on his/her hands to do a full ASCII animation, a la the classic Star Wars version at www.asciimation.co.nz.

Very well done.

>So I suppose the logical next step will be for someone with way too much time on his/her hands to do a full ASCII animation

Or step further into the past and do a Gangnam Style/Bayeux Tapestry mashup.

Oh, I love it when artists are decried (even ever so softly) as having "too much time on their hands" while the rest of us get on with far, far more productive and important jobs.

This is a beautiful idea and really well executed. And it shows a lot of effort and mastery. Thanks for sharing the link.

I would not be even slightly disappointed to learn that had been digitally rotoscoped in B&W then printed, and finally coloured in by hand.

Isn't that interesting? I wouldn't, either, (in fact, that's how I assume it was done) because the alternative is actually kind of horrifying.

But, so, this is a brilliant idea and well-executed, but there's sort of a pretense in there that it's a flipbook in the sense of what a flipbook is. In some sense it's really just a nice rotoscoping of the video, with a manual component artificially added to evoke different connotations.

And that itself is part of the brilliance of the idea, in that it multiplies a thousandfold the perceived effort involved. I'm not hating -- it's neat.

WHY the hell would you do such a thing and then record it on a shitty low-res phone camera? WHY?

If you have to ask...

Because the crude "I did it in my bedroom" aesthetic is what makes it worth watching.

And besides, high quality recordings are unkind to low-res content. One of the interesting things about new digital remasters of analogue television shows is how much more detail it shows than expected. Wall notices containing boilerplate nonsense text in the background (because the set builders knew they'd be unreadable on old standard def analog television) are suddenly perfectly readable. In Star Trek TNG you can now see the saw marks on the edges of styrofoam props like shuttlecraft doors.

Using a lousy camera makes this guy's drawing look a lot better because your imagination provides the missing detail.
