I recently watched all the video I shot of my daughter's first 5 years. Eno and other ambient stuff is almost always playing in the background, with the exception of one segment that I'd completely forgotten about - she's about 3, singing along with "Stop this Car" by Jonathon Richman.

Hearing music at that age must be awesome. You're not worried about what genre it is, or whether it's cool or not...it's all just music, and you either like it or you don't. And when you do, it's the best thing ever. The first grown-up song I can remember liking was "I Get Around" by the Beach Boys, which I played over and over and over again...so much I actually wore out my parents' vinyl copy.

I recently watched all the video I shot of my daughter's first 5 years... I've been going through a few hundred video clips I took of my son's first few years. It's mostly stuff I took and then never watched again, so all the clips are named something like "clip-2003-04-01;11;23;65.dv" and I've been watching them, deleting the ones of the lens cap and other junk, and renaming the good ones with a somewhat descriptive name. My favorite one so far is the one I've named "seamus and grandma dance to They Might Be Giants.dv" That one fucking rocks.

Heh. She's a lot like my bandmates' five-year-old, incidentally the only person I've seen dancing like that at one of our shows. They put on DVDs (at high volume, usually skate videos or her current obsession: School of Rock) for her and her brother while we're practicing in the basement. Yesterday she came down after we finished and gently tugged her mom's pant leg and said: "I've been waiting to tell you this for an hour, but the Beatles are not punk rock." We came upstairs after practice and watched for a bit, loudly. I tried to explain that the Beatles had to stop touring because they couldn't hear themselves over the screaming, and wasn't that punk rock? She was...not swayed, and asked for School of Rock again.

Whoa,awesome! That reminds me of the second day I had my rottweiler puppy last summer, driving down a bumpy logging road cranking the White Stripes. He woke right up and started throwing his squeaky toy around furiously. I've tested him since with various Jack White groups and it never fails, must be something about the frequency of his voice I figure.

So disappointed that wasn't Adele... I read this comment and immediately visualized an entire music video for "Someone Like You" where a girl toddler sees a boy toddler playing in the sandbox with his new toddler girlfriend through the playground fence and then it flashes back to all the good times they had on the swings and slides and monkey bars and shit it would be so good.
