Which part is the carrot on the turntable playing?

Wish I had that kind of free time. Really, I do.

I think this is actually his work time (looks like he's a musician/producer/remixer).

It appears from his band-aids that he's better at manipulating vegetable audio than chopping vegetables.

drezdn: He says in the prelude that it's playing some high hats. At the very end you can hear them very faintly, and it looks like there are wires set up at different intervals.

This is crazy enough that I'm willing to not be angry at having Teardrop stuck in my head for the rest of the day.

Could have done with about 80% less (fewer?) delay effects, but an interesting effort. The original song is so notable specifically for its, shall we say "sparseness," but this really took it all the way in the opposite direction.

Wow, the House MD opening credit flashbacks I'm getting right now. I can barely see the eggplants for all the sepia-toned anatomical drawings in my head.

Am I just not getting something, or are the fruits/veggies he's using completely arbitrary?

Could not get past the sweater he's wearing. Not to mention the knit cap.

Great stuff! YouTube comments, though … If you know this song as 'Theme from House', you failed at life. Apparently there’s not just “you listen to the wrong music”, but also “you know the right music from the wrong place.”

OK, in my defense I knew it as the Massive Attack song when I was in high school. But since then I've heard it again and again watching House, while I haven't pulled Mezzanine out of the CD case in my closet for many years.

They're completely arbitrary and superfluous, i.e. the vegetables themselves do not impart anything special to the sound, they're merely acting as triggers like on an MPC500 Still, it's a fun video!

Coolest thing I've seen today. Thanks.

I agree. Missed opportunity for an eggplant or banana theremin where you could run your fingers around the vegetable for extra quiver.

I know, awesome, right? I need more sweaters.

Anyway.

The MaKey MaKey project was basically the bane of my existence at SparkFun for a while last year. I don't even want to think about how much time I spent wedging ~9300 Kickstarter rewards into our order system and going back and forth over random breakage with customer service people, nevermind things like the whole exercise in hand-sorting little color-coded alligator clip wires after a supplier screwup. We literally just decided earlier this morning that we could pretty much consider our order-fulfillment responsibilities handled.

(If you are ever considering taking on fulfillment of a wildly successful Kickstarter for a new device, do get in touch. I have Opinions to share. If you are considering doing this without a working production and shipping facility at your disposal, you're not going to like them, but I'll share them anyway.)

I am glad to see it having some kind of a lasting cultural footprint. It's a neat little gadget, in that "doesn't actually do very much, but makes a bunch of things easy" kind of way. I still have plans to build a nice wooden enclosure for mine with programmable pedals, but sheer laziness and lack of a woodshop keep intervening.

If vegetables + music float your boat, but you want a more immediate connection between the two, check out the vegetable orchestra, who make (acoustic) instruments out of vegetables and perform concerts with them.
