I thought the joke would get old, but it got better and better. Super enjoyable video and not a bad song. Thanks for posting it.

Heh. Great use of stock footage. Better than a bajillion bank, health, or financial planning ads.

He has stupid hair. No, seriously. I understand the young people are all about irony and absurdity and all that happy horseshit now, so yeah, cute video, but that FUCKING HAIR.

His bird-like head motions, the horrible hair and that nasty alterna-pop voice were huge turn-offs, like, make me look for something to throw type turn-offs, so I turned it off.

The compositing was really great, though!

He's like Weird Al Yankovich. Without the weird, the Al or the Yankovich.

The 'couple' pouring the champagne at 53 seconds was some hideously stilted stock footage. It was like they were preparing for a scene, rather than acting naturally.

Ooh, I like the song but it's the video that really makes this work.

That one model, about the third one in...Asian/Latina-ish....She is everywhere.
She's like the 'Oh, it's that guy' from the movies.

Courtesy of google reverse image search, and my cyber-stalking tendencies, I learned she goes by 'Maridav'.

It is hilarious looking through a portfolio for a stock-photo model. Hundreds of shots taken in anticipation of meeting some future advertising need.

If you look closely, you'll see a lot of such issues with a lot of these clips. I saw a lot of actors stealing glances at the camera, which is a huge no-no for these sort of "reality" clips. I'm betting a lot of these are lower-cost outtakes or second/third takes. Otherwise, this could have been a very expensive video.

That was cool. I've never done compositing like that but I'm willing to guess that 10% of the scenes took 90% of the time.

I like everything about this except for that stupid headband. Stupid hair I can get behind, but, ew.

He's like Weird Al Yankovich. Without the weird, the Al or the Yankovich.

Oh, I don't know. It's good, but it doesn't quite reach that level of perfection.

The last 30 seconds made the video for me.

The problem with having Maridav as a new girlfriend is all your mates roll their eyes and go "er.....yeah...right" in when you mail them her picture. That and the whole giant wardrobe thing.

That and the whole giant wardrobe thing.

Maridav makes some interesting fashion choices, that's for sure.

I think we need a post on Maridav. She looks like she must have some stories to tell.

Really nifty (and I liked that song much more than I expected to).

This might need a NSFW warning: sideboob and walruspenis.

I thought the video was hilarious, especially the shots where he was just a blur in the background! The song...meh.

Stock footage can also be used to creepy effect simply by playing the whole thing, not just the half-second we usually see

Eww, you're right! that guy in the red shirt around the 1:00 mark is super creepy. funny stuff, though!

I hear what he's saying about people who always have a red cup in their hand. Doesn't anyone know they come in black, too?

Really enjoyed this, both the song and the video!

At 2:00 there is stock footage of someone punching a hay bale. I understand that the idea is to cast a wide net with these things (yeah, we got that B-roll), but come on.

Man oh man, this is great. Not the song, the song kind of sucks, but the video is fantastic.

Red cup in hand. (Indeed the must numerous)
Orange cup in hand.
Yellow cup in hand.
Green cup in hand.
Blue cup in hand
Indigo cup in hand. (Vacant niche)
Violet cup in hand. (Up and coming)
Black up in hand. (We have switched to bras and white cups)
White cup in hand. (This is what to search for it you want black cups!)

Oh, and some of the exterior shots with kids on picnics and whatnot gave my a Slenderman sort of vibe. A whiny hipster Slenderman.

Clearly you don't suffer from hay fever. That guy is a hero, man. A hero.

Hay fever. Not a fever. Not (primarily) from hay. Who comes up with these names? It might as well be called laser dropsy. Much cooler.

Came in here looking for the NSFW tag when the sideboob, nekkid couple, girl-on-top-action popped up.

that FUCKING HAIR.

I learned it from you, Dad. I learned it from you.

You need to see him live to get the full hair effect. It somehow works in person.
posted by orme at 8:30 AM on February 22, 2013

I'm amused by the people complaining about his hair and clothes. It is almost as if the people in the stock footage have come to the Metafilter message board to complain "He isn't perfect like us. He doesn't fit into our videos. Freak! Go away!"

It's his hair and clothes and awkwardness that makes it work.

Maridav's Shutterstock portfolio.

Her iStock profile page.

It goes on and on.

Honestly, someone should do an FPP about the world of stock photography in general. What is it like to do all these photo shoots? How do they decide what to do? Inquiring minds need something to read when the blizzard hits on Sunday.

Those list Maridav as the photographer. Is she the model, too? Have we got some amazingly subtle Cindy Sherman thing going on here?

That, or one exceptionally focused photog.

Thank you, Darwin Deez for making "photobombing" irrevocably Jump the Shark (or the Walrus). Actually, it was always Over the Shark, this is Jumping Into the Shark's Mouth. (And what does he even need the girl for when he has that guitar, an iPad Mini and a bowling ball?)

A lot of these stock video people sort of meet all of the ostensible requirements for conventional attractiveness but just have some vague... misshapenness.
