KS has a list of banned vanity plates. I'm sad that GUNDAM is forbidden.

Also: Vanity plates are a point of irritation for me, because people have no imagination when it comes to picking them. I thought the worst was a Camry with a BAZINGA plate, but weeks later I saw a Corvette with LVNLRG which almost made me puke.

Yet another week later, I found a UGOGOD1, which meant that UGOGOD was taken and the driver didn't want to pick anything else.

If they were being really smart, they'd be following referrers to that article, finding threads like these, and reading them for suggestions. Basically a way of crowdsourcing additions to the banned-words list.

(I suspect they are not being really smart.)

Yeah, I'm starting to think that the tool as designed on the second link isn't designed correctly -- that FCK, GAY, BUTT, SEX would all trigger a "No" in the real world in most any combination, because they exist on the list individually, but the tool doesn't take that into account.

But maybe I'm thinking the government is more capable than it really is. It wouldn't be the first time I'd been called a optimistic liberal. (And it wouldn't be the first time I was wrong.)

Nova Scotia's similar list is way more fun than this one. Rather than just being a list of words that they won't allow outright, it's also a list of personalized plates they've had to ban. I said "You know, someone is going to think that says "dumbass." They looked at each other for a bit. Then the brother of one of my friends came up the driveway, stopped and said "Hey, dumbass!" FYoo is fine.

I expect that there is a human element to these things as well. As a teen, I applied for a vanity plate, which was innocent (which I will not reveal). The clerk typed the word into the computer, which showed it as available/not banned. Then, she picked up the phone, and called someone, reading the license plate. They thought about it for a moment, and then cleared it.

I expect that, for example, if I had tried FYoo, however, I would be blocked.

This immediately made me think of Blue Avenger Cracks the Code, a YA novel where trying to outwit a license plate censor is a major plot thread. For the record, our hero in that book put a lot more work into encrypting a much tamer word.

The embedded checker is not so good. I don't think you can fool DMV with the 0 for O or 1 for I tricks, since license plates aren't encoded with both. I would think that the DMV automatically flags for review anything wherein a forbidden character sequence appears as a substring. At the yahoo link we're only checking exact matches against a string list. Some stuff's on there, like SH1T. But most things aren't, and there's no way they'd print a plate that said YUMJI22 or CUN7.

Maybe this word list is only a report of plates banned previously?

I commuted with a coworker and we regularly made guesses about who drove the car. It was fun to sort of try to imagine which of the government drones we worked with could possibly be HOT69X.

And then one day, it happened. HOT69X came out of the building and got into her car and it all made so much more sense.

I wonder if some of these were banned simply due to an insanely high number of requests. If they were publicly available, I could imagine the annoyance and staff time consumed having people repeatedly call to check to see if the tag was recently available, not to mention the possibility of a less-than honest employee "selling" this tag number to a highest bidder.

Just perusing the list it seems that plates like "57CHVY" "60VETTE" and "NCCI70I" would only be on the banned list for these reasons.
