After giggling at the Dean of Boring, I opted for the link to Mr. Elmore instead, and found The Greatest MP3 Site On the Net! Which isn't. But once again I find myself pondering the madness that is top forty music. Britney Spears. Destiny's Child. N'Sync. Backstreet Boys. Enrique Iglesias... I don't know anybody who listens to this crap more than once. How does such curdling waste float to the top?

I was talking with Mike Shannon a week or so ago. He explained he's been to a couple gatherings that he called "radio reunions" this year. Where alumni from various radio stations get together to eat, drink, and reminisce about the good old days, before The Evil One took over. He said no one's willing to take chances any more. Radio stations only allow "sure things" to get on the radio, because even though most of the radio stations in any given part of America are owned by the same small handful of big companies, they're still afraid you'll turn that dial. So they all end up playing pretty much the same crap. This crap only caters to about 20% of the public, but people's tastes are so diverse, most of the slices of the pie are thinner than the meat on an Arby's Roast Beef sandwich.

Catering to a sheepish 20% is comparatively better than catering to ..oh gee, I dunno.. ME!?

But who buys it? Especially when Mr. Elmore's friend is giving it away for free? I just don't understand human behavior.

And with that I now return you to our previously scheduled boring thread.

I don't know anybody who listens to this crap more than once.

It certainly can be nice when all your friends share your musical tastes, but it does not a very deep statistical sample make. Lots of people listen to that "crap" over and over again.
