West Coast Rave Pioneer Scott Hardkiss has passed away. He put together one of the earliest must-have Essential Mixes in 1997, and produced some of the all-time classic rave anthems.

Wow. He was responsible for more than a few of my favorite sweat-soaked early morning dancing memories of the 90s.

Thank you for making this post... I thought about trying to put something together this morning, but was just too sad to do it properly. Too many memories, parties, blurry trips to SF and back that seem somehow more real than his death could ever be.

He mentioned having a cold just two days earlier to a mutual friend. I woke up hoping the rumors yesterday weren't real, that people were misinformed, but no. He's really gone, and the world is a poorer place now because of it.

The 1993 classic track White Love - One Dove (Scott Hardkiss remix) = my feelings now, at sunrise, and forever. RIP, brother. You will be missed...

I collected Hardkiss records religiously, the lush production of both the music and the covers really stood out as a quality product and have stood the test of time. They introduced me to Rabbit in the Moon and on to the Exist Dance label, which was also pretty lovely. In the UK West Coast breakbeat would never be played at a rave, you might get some of it at a progressive house night. Indeed the classic Northern Exposure mix by Sasha and John Digweed is pretty much West Coast breakbeat influenced prog house throughout. This would have introduced a huge number of people to the West Coast sound, all be it a bit late for the scene to benefit. Pretty much what I had been DJing three or four years before it came out, but I'm not bitter. Oh no. Biters

I still regret tossing my Delusions of Grandeur double disc set away thinking, "Everything is online now." Still can't find a good version of both CDs.

(Huge Hardkiss fan. I have multiple copies of "Delusions of Grandeur" on both vinyl and CD. It's only going to become harder to find so grab them when you can find them.)
