The Story of Christoph Niemann's Petting Zoo App, an illustrated article from The New Yorker. "I had this idea of making a simple line drawing that one could naturally manipulate by touching and swiping. How hard could that be?"

That visual metaphor with the bird is just fantastic.

Normally I love the antiquated New Yorker style, with its diaerises and all, but really, "C.S.S." is too much.

I read "C.S.S." as the sort of mistake someone who was just learning CSS would make, but I suppose it is more likely that it is a New Yorker house style thing. Hmm.

The app is fun and adorable and totally worth the $2 I spent on it. Niemann is a total treasure.

Very nice. Some product designers and programmers I know could benefit from reading it.

All worth it for the scene where his kids are beside themselves with frustration trying to teach him to play a team sports video game. If they'd started with Portal, would he still have made the app?
