Native American hip-hop runs the gamut from the prolific pioneer and activist Litefoot to the thuggish Natay. Most of it's more about liberation than bling-bling, and although it doesn't get much mainstream media attention yet, there's lots of artist's sites and music online. Be sure to learn about the gangs and check out the gear, too.

All those Native American rap songs are the same, always bragging about how many beads they have and the heap fly bitches.

Damn, the names are incredible. Warpath, Stormbird, Aztlan Underground, Da Skelpa Squad... As for the music, Natay sounds like he's trapped in 1995 g-funk, but I have high hopes for Litefoot & others. Thanks for the links, liam.

Last year on Thanksgiving, I went to a show at the Knitting Factory in NYC to see Mos Def, who was headlining a benefit for Native American Reservations. Opening were a number of Native American Punk and Hip Hop acts. I have to say that they were not exactly my cup of tea, and that I was disappointed in the number of sweeping statements like "Free all political prisoners!", but from what I observed, these groups were really inspiring to their people. The place was packed, so I am assuming that the benefit was a great success. Although some of the comments that I heard were disappointing, the music from the Native American acts was very emotionally charged and lyrically informative.
For the record, Mos Def never showed.
