Montreal journalist taken hostage in Afghanistan - A day after the Taliban made threats about capturing foreign journalists, a Canadian freelancer (writing stories for The Montreal Mirror and The Straight Goods) has been taken hostage.

Gosh. And Robert Fisk was just poking around the same area, making dismissive jokes in his column about the UK F.O. warnings. The Taliban are as peaceful and benign as the Hobbits in the Shire, after all.

For instructive and ironic purposes only, I would like them to be kidnapping somebody else. Peaceful like, you know.

Ken's brother is a friend of mine, so I really hope this doesn't turn out for the worst, though frankly I'm not holding my breath.

8th journalist slaying sparks media retreat. Boston Globe: "Several major media organizations pulled out of northern Afghanistan yesterday following the shooting death of a Swedish television correspondent as he slept in a guest house compound in Taloqan. The BBC, known for its global coverage, pulled out its team, as did the major US broadcast networks. Reporters for Reuters exited, and spokesmen for the Associated Press and the Washington Post indicated that their reporters were planning to leave the region."
