I need tungsten to live

I just got some of this about a month ago from thinkgeek, and I'm amazed at just how much of my life I've wasted not playing with magnetic putty.

Is it weird that I found this kind of viscerally horrifying?

All it needs is a mottled, organic coloration!

If it were somewhat translucent, such that it could flow over the smooth-featured face of a tiny Lego person, that would be even better.

1. What this needs, the man of twists and turns, is a pair of stick-on googly eyes. And maybe the word NOM captioned over it.

2. How do you get the putty off the metal objects when you're done with it? I imagine it's got to be difficult to get every trace of it off the stuff, especially when they've got corrugated surfaces.

A stronger magnet, maybe.

Well, at least you didn't find it sexy...

I own some of this and LOVE it.

JHarris, it comes off the metal object about like normal Silly Putty would. It is strong enough that it sticks together pretty well and will attract to metal objects, but isn't so strong as to be difficult to remove. For example if you placed the magnet under the silly putty (but touching it) the magnet would fall to the floor because gravity is stronger, but if you get about 2-21/2 sides of the magnet covered in the putty it wont fall (partially due to surface friction I think, and partially due to the magnetism).

So a combination of the natural stickiness of silly putty and the magnets make cleaning it off your metal target a breeze.

I have some and it's easy. Silly Putty sticks to itself pretty well.

Is this a higher quality triple, or do I need a nap?

I'm not sure about the first link, because of the advertising. But this isn't a double of the second link. Naptime, I guess?

You can purchase this stuff here. More about Non-Newtonian fluids here.

I got some of this last winter and had the idea of doing this exact same thing (only mine would have been way less cool using an iPhone 4 camera). Shot some raw test footage and never went further. Note to self: this is what procrastination gets you.

It's all fun and games, until magnetic putty katamaris someone you care about.

I have some on my desk at work, with a die-sized magnet inside it. A student looked at it, mouth agape, and then asked me: IS IT ALIVE??

"It was a terrible, indescribable thing vaster than any subway train—a shapeless congeries of protoplasmic bubbles, faintly self-luminous, and with myriads of temporary eyes forming and un-forming as pustules of greenish light all over the tunnel-filling front that bore down upon us, crushing the frantic penguins and slithering over the glistening floor that it and its kind had swept so evilly free of all litter."

I bet the visual FX guys would have loved to have had this stuff back before you could do the same thing with CG.

Also, who goes to the trouble to make a video like this and doesn't bother to get some little iron figurines of people, houses, cars, trees, etc.?

Definitely needs googly eyes as JHarris said.

Someone needs to layer ferro-fluid on top of this putty and then drop a magnet in.

Having vats of this stuff on hand would be an effective way of dealing with Terminators once Sky Net becomes self aware.

Reminds me of this Tom Zé album cover - Todos Os Olhos - which I believe is a photograph of a body part not normally seen on album covers. Or otherwise.

Time for some music!
