Around the Beatles: those lovable cads perform a bit of Shakespeare

In 1964, The Beatles put together a one-off variety show, with musical numbers specially pre-recorded for the show, along with other musical guests, presented in the style of theater-in-the-round. Around the Beatles was aired in the UK and later that same year in the US, but never commercially released. Luckily, the hour-long show is online, on Dailymotion and YouTube in black and white, and the A Midsummer's Night Dream segment is in color, with Paul McCartney as Pyramus, John Lennon as his lover Thisbe, George Harrison as Moonshine, and Starr as Lion, and also features Trevor Peacock in the role of Quince.

Man, what wonderful performers Paul and John were even back then. George . . . not so much. A bit like watching your shy kid brother in the school play.

Thanks, I had no idea the whole thing was available. I have fond memories of the A Midsummer's Night Dream segment.

That it was 49 years ago is hard to believe. And a little painful.

If Paul were alive to see this he'd be rolling in his grave.

Wow. Really? How is this so little known or ever mentioned?

How is this so little known or ever mentioned?

Maybe cause even the most die-hard Beatles fans get... Beatle fatigue.
