Perhaps you've heard of Weird Twitter, the loosely-organized network of Twitter users with origins in Something Awful's FYAD sub-forum. But have you heard of FeedBuzz, Weird Twitter's take on 'listicle'-hosting sites like BuzzFeed? In the listicle spirit, below are five FeedBuzz articles you won't want to miss. posted by downing street memo (62 comments total) 31 users marked this as a favorite

It's using Weird Twitter/FYAD syntax to mock Buzzfeed, which did a reductionist article on Weird Twitter. FYAD is the only funny part of SA these days.

Alls I know is that Five Types of Electricity article had me laughing my ass off. Thanx dsm.
posted by Rock Steady at 6:30 PM on May 5, 2013 [3 favorites]

This web site, and Weird Twitter in general, reminds me of this:
TT: The upper echelons of irony should always include measures of sincerity. And if the satirical practice is executed faithfully it will achieve something bona fide in its own right regardless.

TT: Through an intense commitment bordering on religious devotion to the absolutely inane, absurd, or plain fucking stupid, a very different kind of sincerity begins to materialize. One of reverence to the ridiculous. You begin to "mean it," but what exactly it is you mean is never quite what appears on the surface, and is utterly inaccessible to obtuse and literal minds. That you "mean it" then becomes inseparable from the joke, and additional rich strata of humor may be stripped aggressively from this irreconcilable truth.

From "6 Reasons You Might Have Forgotten About Dre":

4. You thought he was dead
Okay, I’m blaming Dr Dre for this one too. His prodigy Eminem told us that Dr Dre was dead in one of his songs. Sure, Eminem probably wrote the lyrics but Dr Dre was there and he could have told him to stop.

Knock it off! Hey, knock it off! Quit saying I'm dead!

These are mildly amusing.

Weird Twitter makes me angry. I can't explain why, exactly - I mean, they're just doing their thing.. Would I be happier if they were just tweeting about what they had for lunch or whatever instead of being creative? Whatever, more power to to them. Except I want to throw them all in lava. GET OFF MY LAWN AND MAKE SENSE.

posted by anewnadir at 7:51 PM on May 5, 2013

I no longer practice irony or scarcasm.

Oh the irony in declaring a statement like this! Whether intended sincerely or ironically, there is a different kind of irony present.

The default mode in late stage capitalism is cynicism, the only way to be truely subversive is to be sincere.

There is a different between irony and surreality. We can argue whether the surreal is a form of sincerity or if there's something cynical in rejecting the power of language and abstract thought to encapsulate a thought/movement adequately, but your criticism as stated above is rather facile.

3) What's this money crap people keep talking about?
4) Advertising/Magnets - how do they work?
5) Google isn't a problem. It's a solution in search of problems that don't exist, so it makes them so it can solve them, as it's not evil.

Oh and let me share my new favorite Weird Twitterer with you, Bugbucket:
"hey look at this there's a nickel in your ear" nice trick granpa "there's gotta be more where that came from" grandpa is that a power drill
and
list of best afros in nature:
➊ broccoli
➋ mountain with a cloud floating on the peak
➌ most trees
➍ ant i dropped a cotton ball on
The best way I can describe the appeal of Weird Twitter is that they take elaborate jokes and find ways of cramming them meaningfully into a very small space. A good tweet is conceptually ultradense – a "list of best afros in nature" is already a hilarious premise, provided there's a pay-off, and the imagery in a couple of those bullet points is magnificent. By the time you've digested and internalized what the fuck is going on it's kicked a hole through you and you've already gotten to 4 or 5 more tweets, since they're so small. It's like eating a bag full of Doritos, where one chip is never enough, except instead of a corn chip you're ingesting a potent dose of salvia.

but your criticism as stated above is rather facile.

I'm honestly not sure I had ever said anything that wasn't sarcastic or meant to be ironic. It has been a hard transition to sincerity. They say that converts are the most zealous. As a recent convert that is how I am right now about sincerity. Perhaps has my new found beliefs mature, they will mellow, and there will be room for nuance.

Yeah, FeedBuzz is good, except after a couple of hours straight reading it the other day, I started to feel like all other human beings were ants, just there for the lulz. I had to close the website and step away, since I had to be in polite company later that day.

Weirdly, it kind of started to remind me of the now-defunct Trainsaw, only much more fully realized. The name also reminds me of the FizzBuzz exercise on Codecademy...
