Amazon announces Kindle Worlds

Amazon today announced Kindle Worlds, a service that will allow authors to sell fan fiction based on a limited but expanding number of properties, sharing revenue with the rights holders. The fandom reaction is incredulous and mixed. Racheline Maltese asks: "To what degree does Amazon Worlds suggest that fanfiction can only be legitimized through the eradication of fan culture’s gift economy?"
Exactly what sort of work will emerge from this service is yet to be seen, but the rules are clear on one thing: No porn.
