It is only a matter of time before that bear...

I'm not going to say aww, what a nice bear, so this could be considered a derail. But I really, really wish we (or, uh, Russian circus artists) would stop subjecting large predators to these demanding and arbitrary training regimens for human amusement. It does not good to the animal, it's often dangerous for the trainer, and there are no good ways to deal with animals that will no longer perform safely, but have been hand-rasied from birth. This is no better than those trained chimps, and in some ways it's a lot worse.

OK..... so, my first response was "there is no way to teach a bear to use a hula hoop, that had to be a guy in a bear suit..." ... but, after a bit of youtube search, yep, it's been done before...

My next thought was "that bear relates to that guy like my Husky relates to me."..

then I read QueerAngel28 and Nomyte's comments...

Now I don't know what to think, but I'm hoping that the Husky doesn't rip my throat out while I'm sleeping tonight!

Bears competently playing hockey. For you, HuronBob.

Bears and dogs are different. Yes, both could kill you, but only one of them wants to.

Are you going to post the video of how its mother was probably killed to take it, the siblings that became diseased, died and didn't make it through training? Or perhaps the video of the electric shocks, or fire, or other torture used to train the bear for these "tricks"?

It's wild animal, for freak's sake. Guy didn't just adopt him from the bear shelter or a registered breeder. I know that Americans in particular seem to regard making any kind of animal with any kind of provenance a "pet" as a God-given right, but it's not, and the circumstance around how these animals are made - and kept - as pets are typically grossly inhumane.

Honestly, it's not too much to ask for a little reflection before posting this stuff. Flagged.

I have no insight into whether this is a particularly American phenomenon. I do know that glurge is an end that justifies all means.

I know exactly zero people that this would apply to, and I am American and lived in America for about 27 years before moving to Japan. The closest I can think of is a friend who owns a chinchilla with her husband, who is Chinese-Canadian. She lives in Canada.

Japan? Well that's a different story altogether. Do a youtube search for whatever rare and exotic animal you feel like and you'll probably be able to find a video of one being kept in a 1DK in central Tokyo. I know someone who somehow managed to find and purchase a friggin QUOKKA, but at least they have a proper house and not a tiny apartment. Out of curiosity, whence comes this slightly offensive but mostly just bafflingly random (HURP DURP) opinion of yours? You ARE aware that PETA is an American organization, right? Those crazy fuckers advocate for the end of ALL pets, domesticated and otherwise.

Honestly, it's not too much to ask for a little reflection before posting this stuff.
