Ira Glass can dance if he wants to.

The hot ticket in Dallas this past Saturday night was for the Ira Glass talk at the Winspear. But the hipper ticket was in the nearby Kessler X+ section of Oak Cliff, where Matt Tolentino and his Singapore Slingers shared a bill with Kristy Kruger that blew the roof off the beloved Kessler Theater. Ira, a pal of Kristy's, showed up after his own gig and danced his ass off.

I have no idea what any of this means.

Well, Ira Glass is the super villain. Ira Glass can dance if he wants to is a reference to an old 80s song by Men Without Futures. Matt Tolentino made the movie Pulp Friction, which was Travolta's big comeback in porn. Kristy Kruger made the Kessler Theater run in 12 parsecs. The rest, as they say, is history.

I'm just getting ready to cook dinner and you bring me Ira Glass dancing?

Don't be that guy.

Ira's right there in the video. Curly gray hair, big, thick-rimmed glasses, nice suit, famously dancing famously, clapping offbeat, wondering if he's going to get mistaken for a clean shaven Elvis Costello, if that thing that they made fun of in Treme is going to happen to him but also not caring because he's an enormous nerd like the rest of us and he's just having fun dancing to this old-timey traditional jazz band like he's Groucho and we all didn't know that he could rumba.

I saw Ira's reinventing radio talk when he was in Long Beach at the Carpenter Center. It was really good. I'll be seeing Garrison Keiller give a talk in October. Yay NPR! (and PRI!)

There are many things to love about Ira Glass and TAL, but some in Chicago still remember all his celebrity today, came from sort of a dick move where he screwed his best friend.

The Kessler theater is about 5 blocks from my house here in Oak Cliff. As far as music venues go in Dallas, it is one of the best. My wife and I walk over to the Kessler all the time and have been fortunate enough to see the likes of Ben Kweller, Junior Brown, Alejandro Escavedo, Del Castillo, Sarah Jaffe, AD+d, and Bob Schneider among others. It's an incredibly intimate space, and my wife and I try to make it out as much as possible.

Ira Glass showing up is not a surprise. Seems like we get everyone from the Metroplex around here.

That reminds me that I should make a post about the restaurants of Bishop and Oak Cliff. Unique stuff.

Solid post. Ira's not a champion dancer but he's animated enough to be a huge hit at parties.

He was also emotionally abusive to his ex-gf, cartoonist Lynda Barry. He admitted it, which makes him better than a truly shitty ex boyfriend, but it weirds me out.

Just read this for the first time, and it honestly sounds like some serious sour grapes on Covino's end. The tale from his perspective even outlines Glass keeping him in the loop during negotiations, and Covino admits to being in denial. And he sounds like it's a problem he's grown up with, that his father was a perpetual victim as well. It's like the boss or coworker that gets pissed at you personally because you took a better job.

But, I don't know the scene or the history, so who knows. It also sounds wildly gossipy, enough that I'm surprised it's an article at all. Was it a big deal when it happened?

The girlfriend thing was weird and shitty.
