The mad doctor is (temporarily) out. Five years ago this week, Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog went live, in three separate acts. Since then, there has been confirmation of plans for a sequel dating back to April 2009 -- and July 2011 -- but something always seems to come up... though Mr. Wheadon did have time to perform live, singing commentary on his project, which led to the recording of "Commentary" in 2010, reuniting the cast. Felicia Day, Jed Whedon, and even Nathan Fillion seem a little bit less busy, however... welding kid-toting robots and preparing for the zombie apocalypse.

That "welding kid-toting robots" link is pretty terrific.

Oh, and I wouldn't say that Jed Whedon is "less busy" these days: he and his wife Maurissa Tancharoen are the co-creators of the new Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D TV series that debuts this fall.

(Less busy relative to Joss.)

I'll buy pretty much anything with the Dr. Horrible brand on it but I am really, really hoping that if they do anything else with it they decide to do something in the same universe, because I really feel like Dr. Horrible/Billy's story is pretty much done.

Looove Dr. Horrible and I'm sure Whedon will get back to it when he has time. (Hopefully. We've been binge-watching Buffy, which I somehow never got around to watching until now, and I can't wait to see what he does after Avengers/S.H.I.E.L.D., especially since he's said he'd much rather work on original ideas than continue franchise-type work.)

Buuut:

he and his wife Maurissa Tancharoen are the co-creators of the new Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D TV series that debuts this fall.

...is not correct:

Whedon is married to producer and co-founder of Bellwether Pictures, Kai Cole. They have 2 children; son Arden Cole (b. 2002) and daughter Squire Cole

Jed Whedon is the "less busy" one and the one married to Maurissa Tancharoen that yoink pointed out---not Joss. Jed Whedon is Joss's brother.

I'd just be happy with more footage of Captain Hammer riding around on the roof of a van.

Wearing gloves!

they should have junked the whole Avengers thing (*YAAAAWWWWNNNNN*) and even just given a fraction of the squillion$ to make more Dr Horrible.

Well, in effect that is what they're doing. Joss will fund Dr Horrible 2 with a fraction of the millions they pay him for the Avengers sequel--just as he funded Much Ado About Nothing with a fraction of whatever they paid him for Avengers.

Yes, Joss Whedon is married to Kai Cole. But Jed Whedon, who is co-creator of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D is married to Maurissa Tancharoen. Together Jed and Maurissa are also This Girl--definitely worth a listen. Maurissa's is also the voice in Joss's lovely setting of "Sigh No More" in Much Ado About Nothing. A disgustingly talented family.

Yeah, Joss, Jed, and Mo are all co-creators for SHIELD, and Jed and Mo will be the co-showrunners.

(Zack Whedon is also a TV writer.)

Not quite right. Commentary! the Musical was released with the DVD, the TAL segment was a reprise of that (with slight lyrics changes).

Dammit, these Whedons-and-Spouses make nepotism almost respectible.

The WGA strike was 5 years ago?

Officially feel old now.

Thanks, too, for the reminder abut Felicia Day! It inspired me to go look up the "Do You Wanna Date My Avatar" video for old time's sake. Fun times!

I bought the series via iTunes, and part of the deal, as I remember, was that I also bought any sequels or future episodes.

It will be interesting, if and when more episodes are made, if I will, indeed get them without having to pay for them.

Oh, is it Felicia Day already? I'd better buy some flowers.

So, um...this post isn't saying anything new about Dr. Horrible whatsoever? That is disappointing.

Yeah, totally. I mean, as much as I enjoyed it, the story had one of the most final endings I've ever seen. There were no loose ends, we learned everybody's fate. I suppose you could do some sort of redemption story, but... why? It feels so complete, as is.

the story had one of the most final endings I've ever seen.

Well, I felt the same way about Arrested Development's "series finale" in 2006 (and got paid to write about it):
Where would we go from here? How could Michael return to his family without turning from long-suffering and loyal to a simple glutton for punishment? And what would be funny about George Michael and Maeby in a normal teenage relationship? No, “Arrested Development” has developed as far as it can, and I can accept that, let go and look forward to new shows from the people responsible.
So if Mitchell Hurwitz could pull it off, why can't Those Wacky Whedons?
