Detroit Unbroken Down

The Story interviews photographer Dave Jordano, a native of Detroit and long-time resident of Chicago, who has returned to his hometown to make portraits of people who did not leave. In his online exhibit “Detroit Unbroken Down,” he passes up the grand spaces in ruin or crumbling homes that have become symbols of the Motor City, but focuses on the faces of the city.

Detroit has become a singularly unique place in an unenviable way such that photographers seem to flock to it.

The photographs are very good. He captures people and space very well, especially in the Detroit and small town series.

The Darkness In The Light is absolutely heartbreaking. His introduction frames the series as projecting the women as normal people, yet the images themselves are haunting. The puffy faces of methamphetamine consumption. The omnipresent grimace and 'bug bites'. Difficult to view, and very powerful.

Detroit's actually looking like a helluva good place to retire. Unlimited opportunity (no way but up) and hella great prices.

"Detroit's gotta get better any minute now!" is the political/urban-planning version of "Soccer is the fastest-growing sport in the U.S.!"

Shh, don't scare away the investors.

The investors in Detroit or the investors in soccer?

Thank you for this link.

Now that I have finally figured out how to navigate his extremely non-user-friendly website, I have added Dave Jordano to my list of my favorite photographers of all time.

Great work!

Nice pictures. But taking pictures of urban poor people is definitely not new. I predict a veritable gold rush of high art photographs of poor people in Detroit.
