Greatest Vines 2013

Short video service Vine (previously) is six months old and has developed a distinct culture of its own. (↬Kottke)

Out of the thousands of identical compilation videos, I can't tell you how proud I am that you picked one that's completely unsourced and with a thumbnail of a nearly naked woman.

At least link to one of the channels like this one.

This is a great compliation. It leaves out two of my personal favorites, though:

FWIW, this specific video is the one making the rounds at all the general interest and curated video sites like Reddit, Devour, etc. That's probably the reason it's trending, but blaming the OP for internet trends is unfair.

The best Troy Brolin videos include him screaming 'show some respect!' while stamping his feet, but the LIKEABOSS one is pretty good.

thumbnail of a nearly naked woman.

Weirdest part about that is that the thumbnail doesn't appear in the video anywhere.

Gawker, too.

It used to be texting and driving, now it's Vining/Instagramming/whatever-videoing and driving? Lord have mercy.

But you can click a link in the description to watch an ad and then see photos of the woman. Putting aside the content, that's a way to monetize Youtube videos that I've never thought of before.

This is pretty great. The Internet of my youth is finally coming into its own.

More tiny hyperactive nuggets of cleverness and memes, plz.

Holy shit. Judging from ShawnStruck's urls Vine fixed thier shit so they play on iPad. Well maybe they always worked for everyone except me. Anyway, thank you vine, I used to click on links and be like "fuck, a vine, goddamn t.co links, I don't want to have to load this shit on my real computer" now I can watch all this shit people been talking about.

Lemme tell you I am thoroughly offended by each and every vine, pls post more.

There's a thumbnail? Where?
posted by koeselitz at 9:48 AM on August 9, 2013

If you look on YouTube. The thumbnail for the video is an image not actually in the video. Most youtubers use this feature to put a title card, this person put a woman in a bikini.

Vpeeker, which lets you watch a steady stream of newly-uploaded vines, is oddly addictive.

Also: There seems to be a startlingly large number of people teaching their very small children to twerk. I am not okay with this.

@Keelayjams is the king of Vine.

Ad hominem: “If you look on YouTube. The thumbnail for the video is an image not actually in the video. Most youtubers use this feature to put a title card, this person put a woman in a bikini.”

If you look on Youtube, the video just plays automatically.

I realize now that people complaining of this are probably on iDevices. In which case, they may like to note that the "thumbnail" is not visible anywhere on the Youtube page for desktop users at all.

Vine is twitters best idea since twitter.

The "How to do Stuff" Vines from Max are still my favorites of the medium so far.

Yeah I meant look at his channel.

This shows the thumbnail that the uploader used.

We just aren't seeing it because metafilter. You can see it on the Gawker page.

I checked it in Chrome version.. umm something.

RiFF Raff's best vines.

Nice - I'd seen a few of these as animated gifs here and there. They are much funnier with the sound.

Except for the milk-gallon-smashing stuff. That's just annoying as all hell.

I admire the creative ones. Others were just America's Funny Home videos, but (thankfully) shorter.

Sadly, YouTube screws with the flow of the best (on repeat) Vine I've seen.

Now, now... Where will we be if we start demanding that casual suggestions of sexism are substantiated?

Okay, the ginger baby droppin' that thun thun thun and the volleyball player doing the stanky leg made it worth sitting through.

Is there a copy anywhere? The video seems to have been removed.

I gather that some sort of plugin is required to look at these newfangled vine things [not the youtube version] on an actual computer? Because all that Firefox 23 and IEwhatever will do is show me a still with a speaker on/off in the corner.

copyright bots got it.

This is really cool, though I thought that part of the appeal of Vine was that it looped continuously. This feels a little like watching a gif once. I'm having trouble choosing a favorite!
posted by antonymous at 11:24 AM on August 9, 2013

Well crap "This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by Fullscreen 2." No idea who that is, although other people complain about false copyright claims from them. As FlatLuigi points out there are other Vine compilations out there, like this channel he linked. Presumably all of these compilation videos are playing fast-and-loose with licensing the individual Vines they're stringing together.

I buried the lede but I really like Mat Honan's article about Vine culture, describing how the emerging community there is making Vine succeed even in the face of competition from Instagram, MixBit, etc.

I just make Vine videos of Shepherd brushing our cat, or our cat having an aggressive time with a clean towel, or our cat innocently cleaning herself, or our cat...

Never mind. You get the picture and I need a new hobby.

I think watching the videos in this thread marks the exact moment that I became an old man.

Now I must go out and buy a cane, which I shall brandish menacingly at Viners who chance to trespass on my property...

Vine is actually really cool for attention-seeking Internet Joke Makers like myself. The Channel feature makes you discoverable in ways that Twitter's never facilitated. The videos are so short that users will quickly exhaust the "Popular" section and actually scroll through and watch the "Newly Added" Vines that have just been posted. And those people are generous with their Likes and Revines.

I posted this dumb thing to the Comedy Channel at nearly midnight Pacific Time, and within minutes I'd gotten more Likes and Revines than the Favorites and Retweets on my most popular Tweet ever -- and I've been using Twitter for years.
