Is it blasphemy? Or is it an acceptable way for Christians to go after a new generation of potential converts?
What will the American religious right think of this?
How would people feel if Allah was on these boxcutters instead of anime Jesus?
(Thanks Mister Pants!)

Blasphemy? This? Gimme a break. The only way this is blasphemy is if they start handing these out to unsuspecting children. Until then, it's just marketing.

What will the American religious right think of this?

They'll think, "Hey, this is just like the kind of stuff available at any Christian bookstore!" Now this, on the other hand, puts the ass in blasphemy.

Every Christian bookstore in America is filled with storybooks for children filled with similar kitchy cartoons of Bible characters. I'm not sure that proves it's not blasphemy.

This, I think, is meant to be blasphemy, even though it's a mostly straight depiction of the book of Revelation. If all the characters were pokemon characters, that is.

Is the song "Mary had a little lamb" really about Jesus and his mom? I never thought about it until I saw the boxcutters for Jesus, Mary, and Lamb sitting next to each other...

It turns out jesus, whatever he was worth to begin with, was sold out a long time ago. The money changers have taken over the asylum and the "religious right" is leading the way. You think the people that make this stuff donate to the Democratic party?

If Christianity weren't so dangerous, this would be downright silly.

I'm already bored by bandwidth-hogging Web animation, and a quick glance didn't show me anything I couldn't have appreciated just as much with still images as with moving ones.

Cutesy-pie Jesus is probably fine for three-year-olds, but it doesn't really recommend itself to me. That's not an aesthetic problem but a theological one: I view Christianity as a pretty grown-up faith. You have to get some intellectual and spiritual miles on you to grok the underlying concepts of sacrifice and of a Creator completely inverting His relationship with His creations in order to repair it.

(Also, it sure helps if you're self-confident and secure enough in your faith not to express your part of that relationship in terms of being a control freak toward everyone around you.)

I know that Moslem people would feel terribly offended if Allah's image was on those boxcutters, or on anything else, for that matter....

At least one of the things I appreciate about Islam is they have very strict limits on how their iconography gets used. A strong sense of the sacred would certainly save us from most of the tacky stuff produced in the name of Christianity from those crucifixion pictures where Jesus opens and closes his eyes, to black velvet paintings, to the Left Behind novels (which supposedly are remarkably similar to The Turner Diaries.)

blasphemous? I don't think so, as the producers' intentions seem to be finding a medium in which to spread the word to a larger audience.

those Jesus popsicles that I've seen online, while somewhat humorous, are somewhat blasphemous. . .

oh well. . .

wouldn't it be easier if the religious right simply loaded the federal government up with bible-humpin' theocracy hopefuls?

oh wait, nevermind.

Predictably, perhaps, the interesting bit of this link is that it's Korean. There's a very strong and occasionally scary Korean Christian community, which has intermingled in some odd and interesting ways with the traditional animist beliefs still held by most Koreans to one degree or another.

A possibly interesting (self link) side story is why there are so freakin' many crosses glowing in the night skyline of any Korean city.

I sincerely believe that once the inevitable back-atcha reverse-invasion of western culture by Koreans happens (in much the same way as happened over the last couple decades by the Japanese), North America's collective brain will explode! The Moonies ain't nothin' compared to what's comin'...
