So they have been lying for quite some time. There have been a few recent whistle-blowers: Thomas Drake, Mark Klein, Edward Snowden. We've seen some NSA software. What can we do about it? Is it necessary to protect ourselves? How would we go about that?

What can be done if you need to encrypt your communications:
In 2011 a reddit user proposed everyone use a number of tools to encrypt their communications whenever reasonable as a kind of pledge drive.
For a very locked down system that can still access the net you can look at the Tails OS. Built specifically for this scenario it is a live linux OS that can go on a USB stick or DVD.
