Yeah, I don't get the reflexive vertical video hate - I kind of like the idea that film makers have more choices in formatting their work in the here and now. I wish video sites and players and their attendant embedded tools did a better job detecting and accommodating vert-vids, tho.

That her buns are the best?

My research is inconclusive regarding her buns, but the rest of her appears to be pretty rad, so extrapolating from that, we may conclude that her buns are indeed of superior quality ("best" being a term so subjective as to be meaningless - we all like different kinds of buns.)

My research also reveals that Sir Ian McKellan will be officiating their wedding. This concludes my work, as I must now go into the other room, so that I may explode with jealousy without damaging any valuable equipment.

Stewart and McKellan are such BFFs that it's not even surprising that running an image search on either of their names and "partner" or whatever term of endearment comes up with both of them more than their actual partners. Stewart's Twitter feed is full of stuff like them cooking risotto at ComicCon or geeking out over cool things to do in Berkeley.

I think you mean better designed camera software then.

And this is out there, but people don't use it. So again, I say this is out of choice and preference. It's not like they have no idea how the video will look. They are taking it this way on purpose because they like their vertical videos.

It's like trying to say internet browsers aren't meant to have searches in the URL field. Sometimes you have to go to how things are used, not how you'd like them to be.

I spent part of last week sick and spent so much time lying down, I adjusted my HTPC to portrait mode and watched things while sideways, surfing the net below the video. It was weirdly relaxing.
posted by DirtyOldTown at 8:58 AM on August 28, 2013

To be fair, the vertical format works with this video because it's skillfully framed and there's not a lot of panning. Last weekend, my wife and I were at the Sidewalk Film Festival in Birmingham and we saw a movie called 12 O'Clock Boys about illegal dirtbike gangs in Balitmore. Toward the end, there was mobile phone video of police chasing and beating a rider. It was shot by a panicked witness in portrait mode, so it was very shaky and there was lots of side-to-side motion. My wife, who is a video editor and who sometimes gets motion sickness from too much sloppy handheld video motion, had to flee the theater and puke.

Have deliberately taken vertical videos when I didn't want other stuff in the shot. Such as video of one of my kids, but not their friends.

The babe & I met him a couple weeks ago! He was of course, utterly charming and sweet.

Me: He doesn't know it yet but he's a fan.
Sir Patrick: Babies love me. They look at me and they see themselves.

The poor kid is going to grow up and be so pissed he doesn't remember this.

So again, I say this is out of choice and preference. It's not like they have no idea how the video will look. They are taking it this way on purpose because they like their vertical videos.

I am hideously guilty of taking the vertical videos (and photos) but it's primarily due to how my iPhone feels in my rather small hands; it just feels more secure when I hold it vertically. So 9 times out of 10 I am one-handed OMG-capture-the-moment frentic*, I default to muscle memory and then promptly grit my teeth when I play it back.

No, I mean the phone itself.

Look at the iPhone. The off button is on the "top" and the main button is on the "bottom". The volume is on the side. That's the default way to hold the phone and is the way you both text and do actual phonecalls. Why would it not be the way you take pictures and videos too?

But yes, you can often fix hardware problems in software. Maybe make a CCD that will work equally well in both directions or, if it already does, autorotate the video (or ask the user if they want to).

My first cameraphone would crop the top and bottom when taking video so that if you held it vertical the image would still be the proper aspect ratio. I assume the reason they don't do that anymore is that if you cropped off pixels then it wouldn't be HAITCH DEEEEEE and we can't have that can we?

On my android device, at least, this video is always shown with the side bars, even when I hit the fullscreen button, which means the video is always going to be relatively small. This is probably because YouTube (or something else during the upload process) actually added the side bars, so my phone has no clue that it could just show it fullscreen vertically.
