Tom Waits - A Day in Vienna. "In 1978 or 1979 (we’ll get to that in a minute), Tom Waits was touring Europe. He had a concert in Vienna the day after a show in Amsterdam. He showed up in Vienna and was greeted by two young men named Rudi Dolezal and Hannes Rossacher, employees of ORF (Österreichischer Rundfunk, i.e. Austrian television) with the proposal of shooting an interview while he was in town. Waits countered with a better idea."

Boy, I'm a sucker for every piece of open-ended footage with Waits in it. Thanks !

One night during dinner, the stereo playing 'RESPECT" or some such, my wife turned to me and said, "In my next life I want to be Aretha Franklin." My reply has become a touchstone at my house: "Honey, in our next lives we will ALL be Aretha Franklin."

In my next life I want to be Tom Waits.

That voice. The whole dressing room pacing seems designed to tie the cameraman in knots.

I love Tom, but more and more as I age I can't take the young pretender. He's in character, putting on a show of being an affected creature. It would take years and years more pretending to make the dream come true.

"There's a concert hall in Vienna...." Off-topic, but I kinda want to hear Tom Waits cover "Take This Waltz"

I worked security at one of his shows at the Wiltern while I was in college. He played piano during sound check, and a little girl came out to him. He got up, bowed to her and they began to dance on the stage. Was it his daughter? i dunno, but it was very sweet.
