"Just as much in control of the situation"

Montana District Judge Todd Baugh sparked protest both on the Internet and in person when he suspended all but 30 days of a a 15-year prison term for a teacher in the 2008 rape of a 14-year-old student who committed suicide two years later. In doing so, he appeared to accept the defense's contention that the perpetrator had suffered enough and declared the girl was "as much in control of the situation" as her rapist and that the girl's troubled background made her "older than her chronological age." The judge initially stood by his statements amid calls for his resignation, pointing out that "it wasn’t this forcible beat-up rape, but has since apologized, calling his words "stupid and wrong." The sentence, however, remains in effect.

Judge Baugh has in the past handed down tough sentences for rape. Prosecutors are seeking a way to appeal the sentence.

This post was deleted for the following reason: This is an awful story, but just pointing out something awful tends to be "outragefilter," and not really something that makes for a great discussion. Maybe there a wider or more in-depth approach that could include this, as opposed to "look at this one asshole/miscarriage of justice" sort of thing? -- taz
