"Australia is under new management."

Tony Abbott is the Prime-Minister-Elect of Australia. The carbon boats, it appears, will indeed be stopped. Kevin Rudd has resigned the Labor Party leadership. "And while the Coalition will have a large majority in the House of Representatives, it looks like minor parties - including the Palmer United Party and the Australian Motoring Enthusiasts Party - will hold the balance of power in the Senate."

Is it just me or does the "Palmer United Party" sound like a political party for masturbation enthusiasts?

On the other hand I think we can all get on board with BULLET TRAIN FOR AUSTRALIA.

Most Australian states have insanely draconian speed limits, laws and enforcement. After a friend came back from Victoria he received a fine for doing 103km/h in a 100km/h zone. This is the kind of thing that can happen by putting fresh air in your tyres little alone the +/- 10% the ADR used to have for accuracy in speedometers.

So... a climate change denier. That's not great.

Are you having a lend? Is 103 < 100 in California?

I don't know much about Aussie politics, other than metafilter rumblings about how insane it is. None of the articles I'm reading about the election give the slightest hint about what the politics of these candidates are. I ended up going to wikipedia to get Tony Abbot's political views, which appear to be (from a left-wing perspective) reasonable on aboriginal issues, and really crappy on climate change, abortion, stem cell research, right-to-die, etc. He's the member of something called the Liberal Party, but there doesn't appear to be much liberal there.

So...sorry, Australia.

Yeah, that's the main heads up I give to non-Australians. Labor are liberal, Liberals are conservative, and Greens are very liberal.
