The twin panda cubs at Zoo Atlanta will be turning 100 days old on Oct. 23. Following tradition, they will be named on that day, with a selection of names currently open to public voting. The poll is tucked away on the Good Morning America site and is open until Oct 21.

In addition to those Chinese names on the list, the Atlanta Zoo might realize that most Chinese working in America use an American name.

In Atlanta I'd call one Hank and the other Aaron.

No longer true, the baby panda is now lying on his back waving his little paws in the air like the most adorable thing in the entire world.

Mod note: Switched "poll" url to the more specific GMA/panda page, where the poll is easier to find.

Hey, at least it works, unlike some pandacams I can think of.

(I also got the same cuteness Bulgaroktonos did, by the way)

How unusual are panda twins?

A previous Zoo Atlanta post about the birth notes that "Lun Lun is an experienced and capable mother, but she has never before given birth to twins, which are not unusual in her species."

Wikipedia has this disturbing bit, "If twins are born, usually only one survives in the wild. The mother will select the stronger of the cubs, and the weaker will die," which I guess explains why the Zoo staff having been swapping the cubs out.

The thing about pandas is that no matter what their age it is not particularly exciting to watch them do things unless you have a generalized and overall feeling of excitement at watching cute animals do mundane things. (which is of course totally acceptable and good.) They spend a ridiculous amount of time per day eating very slowly and the rest of the day either napping or falling off things they are napping upon. The fact that the ones on the Chengdu panda cam seem to be doing adorable things often (sliding down slides en masse to form an adorable panda traffic jam, riding on rocking horses, etc) is because the camera-facing enclosures are carefully managed to provide maximum cuteness per minute. The staff there are very skilled at PR. (no judgement, i think what they are doing is great.)

The other enclosures are full of heaps of napping pandas who roll over onto one another, tread on each others' faces, and occasionally poop spectacularly. It is still adorable but not as minimally action-packed.

Damnit, you had better not take Butterstick, Atlanta, or we're coming down there. And don't think we won't do it either, because we're all pissed off from being furloughed from our jobs and having truckers threaten to clog our streets because of your stupid politicians. Just stick to Peach Blossom or something and we'll all be good.

All those names kind of suck.

I propose Statler and Waldorf.

I wish! The only Waffle Houses in central Atlanta is the weird mini-one downtown and the one out by Druid Hills Road/Buford Hwy (neither of which are easy to get to on a hungover morning) and we've pretty much named so many streets in Midtown permutations on Peachtree, you might as well as stay lost.

I mostly agree with this BUT when Butterstick, the one true Butterstick, was a baby and on display, I watched him a) play with dog toys, b) fall over a lot, and c) latch onto his keeper's leg to make her stay for play time, which was hilarious because he was really good at it and she couldn't exactly kick off the million dollar baby, and had to kind of coerce him off using professional panda baby keeper skills, I guess. Way more entertaining than most babies at that stage!

Am I correct in my memory from my only trip to Atlanta that it was possible to be at the corner of Peachtree and Peachtree and to have picked the wrong intersection?

Maybe they should just name all the pandas "Peachtree." That would show people Peachtree pride, and the pandas won't care.

I have a friend who insists that all cats are actually named "Norton." Strangely, cats come to her when she says "Hey, Norton!"

That's not entirely true, GenjiandProust, you'll rarely find yourself at the corner of just P'tree and P'tree.

See, if you start from where Whitehall changes it name (another Atlanta tradition!) to Peachtree St and head North, you'll have Peachtree Center running parallel (after changing its name from Central Ave) until it merges with P'tree St. A few blocks later West P'tree will split off and run parallel to P'tree St until they merge North of P'tree Walk and in-between where P'tree Circle intersects P'tree St. Then you just have the cross-streets of P'tree Valley, Hills, and Battle to contend with, but it's smooth sailing for a while until P'tree Rd splits off from P'tree Blvd shortly after New P'tree starts running parallel. North P'tree Rd then splits off from P'tree Rd and crosses P'tree Blvd shortly before P'tree Rd re-merges with P'tree Blvd and they become P'tree Industrial Blvd. At that point though, you're outside the Perimeter and should turn the fuck around (preferably before you hit P'tree Corners Circle).

I have looked in sometimes at the Atlanta Pandas, but I spend WASAY more time watching Kiko, the giraffe in Greenville. He will be a year old next week. He's always doing funny and adorable stuff.
Pandas are very cute, on a sleepy sort of way.
