This is lovely and perfectly observed. We've all had times when you would write this column for yourself ten times a day, after catching the corner of a stray smile or a chance glance across the gulf of public space.

I just wanted to shake the screen when it became apparent that she wouldn't be taking the role of their fairy godmother. The pure happiness of carbonara was waiting for them, all warm and gooey and entangled appendages! It's criminal!

Reminds me of this line from "Citizen Kane":

Bernstein: A fellow will remember a lot of things you wouldn't think he'd remember. You take me. One day, back in 1896, I was crossing over to Jersey on the ferry, and as we pulled out, there was another ferry pulling in, and on it there was a girl waiting to get off. A white dress she had on. She was carrying a white parasol. I only saw her for one second. She didn't see me at all, but I'll bet a month hasn't gone by since that I haven't thought of that girl.

I used to interview single people (and read hundreds of entries in a singles competition) every year. So many people have this dream (which I used to have as a teen) of meeting someone at the grocery store! Now I have a husband I love going to the grocery store with...there definitely is something to be said for a guy you feel totally comfortable shopping for basic groceries with, that kind of comfort in shared choices.
