I was especially amused to find a write-up of Mumblin' Jim, the psychedelic band from the Dick Clark film "Psych Out" featuring a ponytailed Jack Nicholson as "Stoney".

The also left out The Oneders, from the Tom hanks flick That Thing You Do but included O Town, from Making the Band who are, very contrived, very overprocessed, very strong examples of all that's wrong with the music industry but also, unfortunately, very real.

Surprisingly, they include Toad The Wet Sprocket (a fictional creation of Monty Python that the real band named themselves after), but fail to acknowledge that Tenacious D has now left the realm of fiction and entered reality. Or something.

How true. A very nice link. These comments, by the way, remind me of a map I worked on once, where most of the content people I showed it to commented on how nice it was, and most of the malcontents immediately pointed out what I'd left out. A glass full, glass empty scenario if there ever was one. After that experience, I always try to admire the work done, not what's not there. (And having said that, it is amazing that he includes obscure polka favorites Sven Helstrom and the Swedish Rhythm Kings, and omits the Schmenges.)

mention of the Oneders (oh nee ders) reminded me of Captain Geech and the Shrimp Shack Shooters, also left out of the rocklopedia fakebanica.

(Captain Geech et al. is the fake band the fake band The Wonders play while filming for a beachy-ish movie in the movie That Thing You Do)

i emailed the guide to point these out...

but i also complimented them on the elegant timewaster that he created!

(i hope that doesn't sound like an insult -- i didn't realise i'd spent three hours there because i was enjoying it so much.)
