After you build a mill in the lollipop garden for 100K lollipops, a short time after -- I think around when you hit 90K -- it'll offer you to dig a pond. Then you can buy lolligators for it.
posted by griphus at 9:32 AM on October 24, 2013

The octopus was easy with almost 400 HP and the troll's bludgeon. Now I have his crown I think I can take on the monkey. I have made it through the forest (barely) by spamming health potions.
posted by yellowbinder at 9:33 AM on October 24, 2013

The octopus took me a while, but with red gloves + thorn shield spell + >200 life, I eked it out. The monkey king gets a lot easier when you have the troll's club, enchanted octopus crown and teleport.
posted by griphus at 9:33 AM on October 24, 2013

The issue with the monkey king is that he hops over you. So you can ding him with fireballs that come out of your equipment/that you cast, but if you teleport you can fight him in melee repeatedly.

Powered-up gloves (pink or red, I prefer red) help a lot with the troll. Make sure you equip things after enchanting them. Hell, just always keep a close eye on your inventory. Octopus goes down a lot quicker than the monkey king, but they're both tough.

Also consider the order in which you should take on the big bad guys. Once you kill the troll, octopus and monkey king and enchant (and equip) their equipment, the forest becomes a breeze.

The problem with the Octopus King crown is it doesn't unsummon them, and they don't move ahead of you, so they just stick around progressively clogging up the quest until you quit it.

If only there were some sort of device that would allow you to jump over them.

Incidentally, for those who like the genre, here are all the Candyboxlikes that I know:

Candy Box
Candy Box 2
A Dark Room
Cookie Clicker
Clicking Bad
Speed Warp
Anti-Idle
Number

Play them all concurrently! A Dark Room is probably my favorite, but Candy Box is and always will be the original.

That damn teapot.

There are a lot of puzzles in this one, and it seems like a few have multiple solutions, and they're not gated one after the other like in Candy Box 1. This is fun!

I found this out accidentally, but when you're playing tic-tac-toe with the squirrel you can win by clicking outside of the 3x3 board and get a 3 in a row that way. Of course, it's not the way to proceed, but I found it amusing.

If only there were some sort of device that would allow you to jump over them.

That works only sometimes, and the randomness makes it difficult to use well. What do you do if one is summoned over your head? (Answer.) The summoning spear is more predictable, and is how I....

If you're having trouble with the Cyclops' puzzle, which is difficult to get a handle on, here's what I remember (hover over)....

I finished this earlier. A Dark Room was the most satisfying of the bunch and I found Candy Box 2 a bit more disagreeable than the first one, but this might be due to the novelty of the first one. Loved the Cyclops' puzzle though (so annoying).

I'm almost at 1,000,000 lollipops... should I buy the shopkeepers hat, the witches hat, or convert it to candies to buy health with?

Or save up for the scythe, which is 5,000,000 candies O.o

SPOILERS about what these items do:

Shopkeeper's hat is 7x candies from quests, witch hat increases the potency of spells and potions and after a certain point your health maxes out from eating candies (IIRC it was 1000 without any items or wishes).

/ITEM SPOILERS

Hint: try using what you get from the big room in the castle with the well. M reduces countdown up to 0.

Now, hard mode!

I'm not sure, I suspect not. I just had a run in which I survived for a good while, and the sea snakes keep getting more and more frequent and faster. At the end I had three on-screen at once.
posted by JHarris at 2:54 AM on October 25, 2013

Second row, third column is the Heart Plug, found in the cave, which increases health by 20%.

Fourth row, second column is the purple shark fin, found, I think, by surviving a very long time in the sea. It gives you the Black Hole spell.
posted by JHarris at 2:56 AM on October 25, 2013

That first thing will probably be useful in hard mode, since it doesn't seem like eating candies increases your health, or if it does it requires a lot more candy.
posted by Elementary Penguin at 2:58 AM on October 25, 2013

I dunno, 20% isn't really that much concerning some of the enemies in this thing. You start with 100 health, that's only 20 more points. It's easy to get in any case, once you know how.

19:204 (+37)
20:251 (+47)
21:311 (+60)
22:388 (+77)
23:487 (+99)
posted by griphus at 10:34 AM on October 25, 2013

Lolligators do convert one candy to one lollipop. Griphus is describing the ratio of number of lolligators to number of conversions per second.

Lolligators aren't really worth it until you've bought everything with candy that you can buy. Until then, it makes more sense to convert lollipops to candy at the wishing well, which gives much more candy than you get by upgrading the mill.

Also, apparently Candy Box 2 is going to support outside level additions, with its Arena mode. That could be very interesting, considering that the game didn't get nearly as over-the-top bizarre by the end of it like the first one did, which required abusing invincibility potions to win out.

That's the thing about these games, I've been thinking. They make into a play mechanic something that other games would restrict as an abuse. Exponential money growth? In a traditional JRPG it breaks the game, but here it's the sole road to success.

You can et 'em for hit points, throw 'em into the Well for healing, or you can feed 'em to the lolligators for lollipops -- which is really just for the Sorceress' Hat by this point. That seems to be it. Maybe when user-made quests get put in there will be a further use for things, but until then, it's just an increasing number.

Even with health regeneration being greater than the damage taken where you are basically invincible it seems to not have an end. I let it run for a half hour and the snakes don't even take damage. You need the three fins though.
