I don't get why the French hate us. What did we do? They gave us that nice statue and we saved them a few times... you'd think they'd like us.

This is such an anti-french hate article...

I like this part:
Along with the rest of the European Union, France sends millions of dollars to the Palestinian Authority every year.

Is it any worse than putting 40% of the US's international help money into helping Israel ? Now look who's talking about 'millions' when US taxpayers have surely paid 'billions' supporting Israel's war-machine.

Now there's the part about Turkey cooperating with the US when France isn't. Hey, who's joking whom ? Turkey is far from being a champion of human rights, and France publicly aknowledged Turkey's slaughter of millions Armenians early in the 20th century, which not many countries have done, in fear of stopping business relations with Turkey.

As a french, I feel insulted by this article. No wonder the french hates you, if your medias let such fuckwit express their moronic tendencies to a wide audience.

Poor outrage-slut Ann Coulter, like a junkie, forced to make her opinions, as they appear under increasingly obscure mastheads, ever more outrageous and mad, just to elicit some response.
I give her another year before "invade Poland and blame the Jews" gets its first airing, on the back of her nekkid chick-with-gun centerfold, in the Militiaman's Gazette and Arms Cleaner Quarterly.

stbalbach, just for the sake of ranting, I'll take your post seriously. Just remember it's only ranting, and that I didn't really feel bad at your answer. :)

The average french person, who loves DisneyWorld by the way, is not hating McDonald's because it's American, but because their food sucks, is too expensive, and does not feed you.
I'd much rather have a 10 euros' lunch at a local little restaurant that actually cooks food, than having the same lunch at McDonald's for 8 euros. My friends seem to be like-minded. When we decide on some lunch together, the only reasons we'd go to McDonald's would be that we're either in a hurry to go elsewhere (fastfood), or that we're broke and can only spend that much to feed ourselves 1/3 of a normal lunch instead of being able to pay a little bit more and have a real lunch.
Now I moved back to Corsica and there isn't any McDonald's here, so people generally eat real food (or buy their junk food and be their own McDonald's).

This post doesn't go anywhere, does it ?

I just re-read the article and stumbled upon that superb quote:

Aren't we the ones who should be arrogantly oppressing countries that unaccountably do not have the death penalty?

Yes, France is such a terrible country, and so are a lot of countries in this world, who do not kill the guilty when the case is judged. I fear for my life everyday. Oh, and we really support Mumia because his name sounds arabic. If he was named John, we would have moved on.

I'll happily speak for the silent majority: I would have been for bombing France a long time before 9/11. I don't need Ann Coulter to encourage me.

In the words of a friend who vacationed there recently (he lives in Queens): "Save your money and go to the Bronx. The streets are cleaner and the people are more polite."

My love to you outRAGeous french types!

Often people mistake Paris with France, because that's the only place they visit in France.
Paris sucks, the streets are often dirty and the people in these streets are either snobs or jerks.
France is NOT only Paris.
Actually most american tourists' bad experience is that french people ignore them when they're talking in english. Are they expecting the average french Pierre Paul Jacques to understand anything beyond french ? How would an average american from the Queens react if I started talking Corsican to him ? Wouldn't he just ignore me ?

...And if you're going to bomb countries just because some terrorists happen to live there, you might aswell start by bombing your own cities, don't you think ?

This is so weird. On 9/11 after witnessing the towers collapsing my girlfreind asked who I thought was responsible. I answered, "I don't know could be the Arabs, could be domestic, could be the friggin' French for all I know.."

Was I on to something?

perhaps....

Funny thing is, France is one of the countries better suited to putting up a half-decent fight against the US military. Would be fun to watch, anyhow.

Who knows, if we lock Osama and Ms. Coulter in a room for a while...
posted by Jongo at 9:12 PM on December 22, 2001

Fuck the French. They suck. I don't care for Ms. Coulter, but she's 100% on the mark you know what they say about broken clocks... The French hate the US because they consider themselves to be culturally superior to us [and everyone else, for that matter] and can't stand the fact that American popular culture reigns superior in the world.

Well, screw them. They can go to hell.

France is unique, always has been, and if it didn't exist it would be necessary to invent it.

Ann Coulter is an intellectual midget who panders to the dark side of ditto heads and freepers. A professional troll.

Paris sucks

Oh it does, does it, michel v? You remind me of that fanatical Corsican in the Astérix book. Paris is one of the three most beautiful and interesting cities in the world. And Parisians are alive, funny, rude, witty, stylish, unique - much like New Yorkers.

You traitor!

Though I did enjoy your lie about a MacDonalds hamburger costing 8 euros and a properly cooked meal in a restaurant only 2 euros more :)
posted by MiguelCardoso at 11:17 PM on December 22, 2001

It's not just a hamburger. You don't buy just a hamburger, you tend to buy the whole thing, which generally will go up to 7/8 euros (dessert + café).
And I'm sorry if I know good 10 euros restaurants... (ever visited Montpellier ?)

The problem with Paris is that the parisians are quite full of themselves and look down on the rest of France, such feeling being relayed by our Paris-centric politics and medias. I like Paris as a city, but the inhabitants are just annoying, the fact that foreigners think of frenchies as parisians is thus very embarassing...

Don't they call it a Royale with cheese?

Seriously though forget the French, the US should attack us - England. We've got plenty of fundamentalists and nutcases brewing in our country. And unlike the French, who as Rastafari so eloquently pointed out think they're culturally superior to the US, we actually are culturally superior to the US. Double the reason to take the war to Blighty, I say.

PS Miguel: "outrage-slut" -- I love it!

> why the French hate us

A more valid question, given the (admittedly tongue-in-cheek) tenor of the article, is: why do Americans dislike the French?

Two reasons jump to mind:
1. with de Gaulle, France had an independent post-WWII foreign policy, something no other European country had.
2. because the British dislike the French (who return the sentiment) and the US is still very influenced by Britain.

France is of course the biggest economy in the world after the US, Japan, and Germany, so not exactly "puny", and of course the US didn't get to occupy it for years and write its constitution.

It's striking that most every article on France in the US (or the British) media takes a very peculiar mocking tone. There's no doubt France annoys the hell out of the US.

Incorrect. The UK is fourth. France is fifth. Least according to the CIA stats.

wackybrit, where do you get your figures? See below. Not that this really matters. Exchange rates and so affect these numbers a great deal. I had forgotten to check China and India's (slightly suspect) figures, so France would actually be 6th.
From the CIA Factbook GDP figures, 2000 est., trillion, purchasing power parity:
  United States: $9.96
  China: $4.50
  India: $2.20
  Germany: $1.94
  France: $1.45
  United Kingdom: $1.36
  Italy: $1.27
See also these ranked 1999 figures. Aha, in the OECD's version, depending on how you measure it and on the rate of the dollar, in some cases Britannia does rule again...

Other than the false suggestion that the French put up a fight against the Germans in WWII, there is nothing outrageous or inaccurate about the article.

The French are, indeed worth loathing, or at least not trusting when it comes to issues of morality. The French set the standard when it comes to econo-whoredom, as the article points out. I really don't understand it, but it's true.

As for Paris, it's a visually stunning city, but a VERY dirty, polluted and unhealthy one. Generally, the French are way behind in environmental concerns, so the comments made herein are on the mark. So, FUCK the French: IGNORE THEM as often as possible.

And greetings from Paramus.
