Wow, great! What was the one between Superman and Harry Potter, at around 3:00 - 4:10?

That was very, very cool. Thanks for posting.

Also, love the pirate flags at the end. Especially because there's still like a month before they actually play Michigan.

Someone on reddit posted their Michael Jackson tribute as well. Check out the moonwalking starting at about 4:00.

I figured that I would glance at this and then yawn, get distracted, and move on to something interesting.

Instead, I watched it over and over because there's just too damn much to take in on a single viewing.

This is indeed incredible.

Their Disney / Shrek one was great too.

How are these formations designed? Anyone know? I'm going to have to look into that. Thanks so much for posting!!

I think it's been posted here before, but the video games one was wonderful.

As a musician, ex- band member and lifelong resident of the better state to the north, I can watch and appreciate these, knowing at the end of the day they still have to live in Ohio and go to Ohio State.

Seriously, very challenging to get every person's placement right while playing. Props to the band director, musicians and whoever else helps create these.

Another former drum major and marching band member here. I get goosebumps (literally) whenever I see really good fieldshows like this. Twice I shouted, "Are you KIDDING ME?" while watching that. Ohio State never fails to impress.

I'm with you absquatulate - really impressive stuff with a TON of work behind it.

Insane choreography there. Nice reuse of the red banners for the phonebooth and then the bandana.

That's amazing. I was also thinking "Well I'll take a look I guess," but I watched the whole thing.

Damnit! Why did they start with the Superman theme?! That one always makes me tear up.

Every change used to just be plotted out on basically graph paper, with ink, but I'd have to believe someone's developed software for it in the years since I was marching!

High school marching band veteran here (and someone ineligible to join my home state's marching band because women weren't allowed until 1973). This band is phenomenal; Maintaining that sound while executing new shows every week is almost beyond my comprehension. My nephew was in this band for a while and it was a fulltime job. And he loved it.

wow, I really enjoyed that, thanks!

My nephew is an alumni of TBDBITL (The Best Damn Band In The Land). Yeah, modesty is not a requirement. The members of the band work hard; here's the current roster. There are loads of traditions, taken very seriously, sort of goofy, but fun, in a weird, Midwestern way. Script Ohio is a big deal - it's on the license plates, with a recent version including the Ohio State School for the Blind and a 'script' Ohio in Braille. This running horse is amazing.

That state to the north (ahem) doesn't do script, and the response was swift.

The gold standard for designing drill formations for marching band / drum corps is Pyware.

How those formations are executed depends on the individual group. In most competitive high school bands and drum corps, each member has an exact coordinate on the field for each formation, e.g. "Joey Tuba, for set #123, you're 2 steps inside the 45-yard line, 6 steps behind the front hash". You memorize your "dots", then march from dot to dot in the specified number of counts.

There's some degree of "guiding to the form" as you go, e.g. you watch to make sure you're not sticking out of the line or curve by taking too big/small a step, but generally you learn in practice what size step is needed for each transition, then you go and do that.

Put it all together, practice the living heck out of it, and you end up with this.

That one always makes me tear up.

I'm sitting here all misty-eyed in sheer appreciation of the effort on display here. The fact that they're also playing music is simply mind-boggling. I can't even get a group of six friends to agree on what ride to go on next at Disneyland, yet here are a hundred or so performers who got their shit together on an unfathomable level.

This is the kind of thing I reserve my kudos for.
