I sense a new fitness trend forming.

Like those train horn "pranks", it's really more obnoxious than funny. And there should be a rule that you can't call your own video "epic".

Momento Mori Running Camp: How long can YOU outrace the grim specter of death?

Congratulations on making some joggers slightly increase their speed, and scaring some excitable 9 year-olds.

I'm really curious what sort of R/C rig he had that could carry all that kit around and still fly. Also, as a lifelong fan of both Halloween and pranks, I unabashedly love this.

Drones have gotten a lot more WarHammer 40K. Will the Empire of Man be far behind?

Hmmm, freaking out cyclists seems like a good way to hurt someone.

Actually, now that I check out some of his other "epic" videos, this Tom Mabe guy seems to be pretty much of a tool....

This is amazing. This is one of my favorite things now. I am so happy.

That is the fakest, cheesiest-looking thing I've seen in a long time, and I find it difficult to believe that anybody would be frightened by it, except possibly in an it-might-be-terr'rists sort of way.

But he's America's Funniest Prankster!

How in the world did he keep that thing up and still maintain directional control? I am no RC'er but from a common sense standpoint that looks impossible (and obviously isn't)

I think I'd be more inclined to examine it to see how it manages to fly rather than running in terror.

Curious about the rig, as others have noted.

The "pranks" themselves looked staged, as in, "Hey do you wanna be on a viral video? Great! When I fly my Reaper over you, act all scared and run away. Yeah, just do whatever you were doing." The kids playing basketball would have either jumped up and pulled the thing down, or hurled their ball at it (or both).

I'd assume the reaper is suspended below a sky-blue quad-rotter drone, Emperor SnooKloze.

No matter how grim it may look, if it doesn't have a scythe, it can't do any reaping.

Not scary.

They could have least flown it at night while people were walking through a cemetery of something... at least try to be scary

Oh, uh... that's my rather elaborate network of trusses.

Would be much scarier with an American flag on it plus then actually killed people

You know, you can just chase people with a knife and they'll run. You don't need to go through all this trouble.

Bill: It's the Grim Reaper, dude.
Ted: Oh. How's it hanging, Death?

How come they were all running away in slow motion? Didn't they know it was Death?
posted by mittens at 6:21 PM on October 29, 2013 [2 favorites]

Crud, I hope they didn't do that in the obvious way. RC aircraft range from "nearly harmless fly it in the mall", through "flying blender x4", and up to "screw up and chop off the top of your own skull". One with enough power to drag that much foolishness through the air is probably not right at the lower limit of that range.

Flying them near people who haven't been made aware of and consented to the risks is deeply obnoxious. Flying them at people is the kind of jackassery that's likely to be considered as the FAA draws up its new rules.

Hook a cam up to that thing, wait until night-time, and then float in front of some windows with open curtains/blinds, and let the scary fun really begin!
posted by stifford at 7:22 PM on October 29, 2013

I'm not sure it's a self propelled drone type vehicle. A little after 1:56 there's some weird wire foolery that pops into frame for an instant.

Too bad. It looked pretty cool at first. (but I might be wrong)

Or, better yet, take the chain off a chainsaw. Works a treat, or, ummm, so a, ummm, friend tells me.

Eponysterically, I must say, if something like that happened, I'd have to expose myself/rub one off in complete disregard/incredibly bad attitude about the prank. Of course, I live on the fourth floor of a building, so not many would be disturbed... But I would bet even money it wouldn't happen again...
