Reggie Watts on death metal, specifically Exhumed's album Necrocracy

"I talk about death in my comedy because it is something real, but also something that we don't necessarily like to talk about. That's why death metal talks about it too. Death metal is about when death is occurring, or has occurred, and all the mythology that exists beyond that: demons and zombies and hell. And lots of decomposition. And the music is fascinated with that because it's a fascinating topic: we all think about this stuff. Then the sound of the music matches what the content is: It just wouldn't sound right to have that kind of music paired with lyrics about, say, going to your favorite coffee shop and seeing a cute girl. That just wouldn't work. Although, come to think of it, that would be funny to hear." Reggie Watts is an internationally renowned vocalist/ beatboxer/ musician/ comedian, and an aficionado of death metal, as seen in his review of Exhumed's album, Necrocracy (streaming on Bandcamp)

But it's the same thing as people who are into Dungeons & Dragons — they're very serious about the game, but they also know they're playing a game.

I have not heard of Reggie Watts, but I like his friendly death metal explaining. I would like him to be around the next time a stranger glances at my phone to see I am listening to a song titled "Anal Skewer."

From my experience, at least some bands can laugh at their scene, which makes listening to music with them a lot of fun. For example, check out the final track on Exhumed's compilation of old tracks, Platters of Splatter. Yes, that's their take on Madonna's Material Girl.

Oh, and the first track from their album Slaughtercult is called Decrepit Crescendo, which is a song about death farts (that is, farting after you have died).

Yeah, I think all those early 2000s west coast gore bands had a great sense of humor! I remember enjoying Lord Gore and Ghoul the most from that bunch. It was rumored that someone from Exhumed was one of the pseudonymous members of Ghoul.

Oh, man, the blatant Slayer solo in that song whammy bars my heart strings.

Ohh, there are plenty. Jason Suecof, who is super well-known for producing and mixing bands such as Trivium, Daath, All That Remains, Bury Your Dead, The Black Dahlia Murder, Job For A Cowboy (shout out to my hometown buds), and so many more, has a "band" called Crotchduster that is basically a huge joke. "Mammal Sauce" I guess it isn't so much him laughing at the scene, but it's a joke nonetheless.

He's the guitarist of Capharnaum.

This is a really good, insightful bit of writing by an enthusiast, not a critic.

I'm glad to see this glowing appreciation of Exhumed; I fondly remember meeting Matt Harvey as a clerk at my local comic shop in the Bay Area, where he would stage impromptu in-store dramatic readings of Jack Kirby comics.

He's a great guy, and I've enjoyed watching and listening to his musical career, including having the band crash in my hotel room at the San Diego Comic-Con back in the 90's.

Filthy light thief , that Material Girl cover was a hoot!
Graveworm's cover of Bonnie Tyler's I Need a Hero has a lot to recommend itself as well.

I just saw Exhumed open for Carcass, and they were way more hilarious than I'd ever realized from their albums, including a goofy chainsaw chase, a fake drummer death and resuscitation, and a ton of crowd work. It was a ton of fun.
