The BBC are testing out Ogg Vorbisfor audio streaming. Ogg is a completely Free and open audio codec. This is great news for Ogg Vorbis, as you don't get a much better endorsement than one of the most respected media services trialling your system.

I've been ripping all of my CD's to vorbis instead of to mp3 for a couple of months now, and I'm pretty happy with the results. Admittedly, I can barely tell the difference between any of the compressed formats and the original CDs, so I don't know if my endorsement counts for much. I'm going with ogg because I like open source and diversity.

What the poster failed to note was that it only took hours for the EIAA to stop the BBC with a lawsuit. Their statement that they will stop all forms of broadcasting if not done their way and their pay. The story here is the goofy RIAA that has stopped Napster, goning for p2p now and intent to outlaw MP3 next and they wont stop untill they control every internet music option.
Sorry for no link it looks like the media is scared of the EIAA.

Maybe "endorsement" is a stretch but at that level of corporate complexity there's been a lot of testing before they get to the "testing out" stage.

timetostepback: hrm? The streams are still live, and have been for at least three weeks. Not sure where you're getting this 'shut down' bit from, but they're very clearly still up. [Luis says, hoping he didn't just bite on the first metafilter troll...]

We'll see if Ogg is really free in the end. Last I heard, Fraunhofer was still claiming it infringes on their MP3 patents.

thanks louie I saw it on slashdot and I couldnt get them to play so it appeared to make sense. I was incorrect and got tricked by those pranksters on slashdot im sorry.
