Everybody's talking about Beyoncé, but earlier this week, 90s alt-pop superstars Cibo Matto dropped the music video "MFN", their first release in over fourteen years. It's the leadoff to their upcoming album "Hotel Valentine" due on Valentines Day, 2014. And it's about time.

Working for Vacation, Know Your Chicken, and of course Birthday Cake are great if you want to hear their earlier stuff.

I'm not talking about Beyoncé.

Wow, my iPhone autocorrects to add the accent aigu over Beyoncé.

"Birthday Cake" was a mix tape staple for me in college, back when my thirtieth birthday seemed really far away. Time passes.

I'm not talking about Beyoncé either, but I gather there is some sort of Moral Panic.
You wouldn't get a moral panic over Chibo Matio.
I mean, they were in goddamn Buffy.

Of course, that's the only reason I remember them (that, and that clever backwards video clip), but it is so nice to have them back.
And they swear so adorably.

Everybody is demonstrably not talking about Beyoncé, but I too love Spoon.

Beyawncé never made anything as ridiculously awesome as SciFi Wasabi imo.

SciFi Wasabi is always on my iPod, no matter what.

I only know them because in one episode of Buffy all the characters suddenly had always been huge fans, and they played a show at the Bronze.

MIA owes a debt to Cibo and now the debt is repaid.

Artichoke. Man, that album rocked. Viva la Cibo! Great new track too. Cheers.

I didn't realize it until now, but of all the defunct 80s/90s bands that have been reforming lately this is the one I wanted most. I've seen The Pixies and Pavement and all of that. But secretly, unconsciously I just want Cibo Matto.

Their version of "The Candy Man" still sneaks into 50% of my mixes.

I thoroughly enjoyed guesting with them (on drums) at one of their very early gigs in NYC, circa 1994. It was at a venue caled the Cooler, way over on the west side of 14th street, IIRC. Now long gone. Really happy to hear they've reunited and have a new release!

Was just thinking about them recently. In '95 (or was it '96? I guess if you remember the 90's, you weren't really there.) went to see Boss Hog in a tiny club and some band with a Japanese name was opening. Never heard of them before. They were fucking awesome and Sean danced with my GF, which made her squee. Cibo Mato joined Jon and Cristina on stage later and was just a happy thing of noise. Definitely one of my all-time favorite shows.

Haven't listened to the new stuff yet but just getting goosebumps thinking of them back together again. Nostalgia is a dog from hell, but it's not bad sometimes. Thanks for posting this.

Back then I got into them because I thought it was kooky to hear a Japanese woman shout-rapping about chickens and rotten milk and stuff... and I kind of hated Stereo Type A because it took them forever to get to those parts.

Now it's 300 years later and I'd much rather listen to Aguas De Marco than Beef Jerky.

I definitely got suckered into buying that Butter 08 album cuz of them though!

I met my current partner in 2001 at a shitty now-defunct bar in Montreal. We were young and discussing our top five bands. Most of our entries were unimaginative and predictable: the usual suspects Pavement, Pixies, the Clash, etc. My partner put Cibo Matto on her list and I was like wtf? And she was like, "oh, they're a Japanese punk band." Then she put "Birthday Cake" on a mix CD and gave it to me and that was that.

My partner and I play Stereo*Type A all the time. I bought singer Miho Hatari's album Ecdysis a couple of years ago. Nice. Her bossa nova love was in evidence. This new song: good, although I usually get off on singing more than rapping, so we'll see. It's also a pared-down version of the group, apparently, without Sean Lennon and two others. I'm getting this info from Wikipedia.

If you want to feel out if someone is cool or not, say "CiboMattoNineteenNinetyNine" around them.
How they react will tell you if you made a new best friend or not.

I always refused to believe Cibo Matto broke up. I always insisted they were just on a break.

A really long break, maybe, but a break all the same.

I have no idea why more people aren't talking about this. This is exciting! I love the stuff both Miho and Yuka have been doing since Cibo Matto went on a break, but I love them working together again.

Cibo Matto: not a japanese name. FYI

OH MAN! I saw them on that Boss Hog tour, too! I'm so excited for MORE! Yay!

I run a book sale at my local library where people donate their used books and CDs. I always grab a few CDs by artists I've never heard of. Several years ago, it was Cibo Matto's StereoType A, and it became my favorite road trip CD that summer. Especially "King of Silence." So smooth, such a groove. Plus horns!
