The Headless Chicken Solution

Ford proposes this solution for two reasons: To meet the rising demand for meat, particularly poultry, and to improve the welfare of the chickens by desensitizing them to the unpleasant reality of their existence.
"There are numerous differences between the current dominant production systems and the one I am proposing, but the fundamental difference is the removal of suffering. Whether what I am proposing is an appropriate means to achieve the removal of suffering is open to interpretation."

Never has the urge to join MsEld in vegetarianism been stronger. I've been eating much less meat, and somewhat better sourced, for years but, yea, making the final move looks better everyday.

The moral objections to this I see as two-fold:

A. Medical: If we eat food that is wholly unnatural we open the door to having all kinds of weird stuff in there that can affect our health or development in some unforeseen manner.

Possible Solution: Rigorous, independent testing.

B. Spiritual: Souls exist, animals have souls and this is the removal of that soul, a massive crime.

Only Solution: Stop eating animals entirely.

Practically in terms of the alleviation of suffering from the billions of animals who are caged and conscious now, it does seem hard to say why this wouldn't be progress.

The very thought makes me want to behave like one...running around in pointless circles of horror!

(Seconding your thoughts RolandOfEld).

Thing, could you be thinking of You've been living in a dream world, Ginger?
"As long as their brain stem is intact, the homeostatic functions of the chicken will continue to operate." It's the Matrix. For chickens.

(Potomac Avenue: despite my flip reference to Ms Atwood up above, I tend to agree with your points. As long as it's done properly, lab-grown non-sentient animal protein seems like a more ethical alternative to the factory farming and slaughter of sentient beings. I say that as a meat-eater. I just wonder what the odds of it being done properly are.)
